In the attic...
The dust may be yet to settle over Giza's supposed 'tube' network, but it seems Egypt isn't the only ancient site in which to find subterranean wonders. Archaeologists in Sri Lanka have recently embarked on a proposed four-year project to uncover a 'hidden city' lurking below the famous sacred site of Anuradhapura.

Director-General of the country's Central Cultural Fund, Dr Siran Deraniyagala, will be joined by archaeologists from Berlin University to unshroud the secrets of one of Sri Lanka's famous ancient capitals.
Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka's holiest sites
As yet no archaeological team has conducted a complete exploration of Anuradhapura, which is believed to have been founded as far back as the 5th century BC.

The city's cultural and political zenith was during its era as capital city between the 3rd century BC and 993 AD, when it was abandoned following an invasion. Its pretty ruins, including Ruwanwelisaya Stupa and the Avukana Buddha, remain a popular tourist haunt today. The city still remains a sacred place for Buddhists.

Sri Lankan officials will be hoping this latest coup can reignite foreign passions for a country which has only this year emerged from a bloody 16-year civil war.

Great News!

From tourism perspective, this is Sri Lanka's unique selling point... its heritage!

Sri Lanka may not be the shopping paradise with theme parks and shopping malls all around.. it will take time for Sri Lanka to compete with other Asian countries to be on that list, but in the meanwhile we should use what we have, to build our own brand of tourism!

well i dont know much about archeologists. but the only dr.sameera de alwis i know about is a computer guy. more specifically involved in reverse engineering.

yep....but see just coz he is a computer expert...did it stop him learning about this...and so many other amazing things....:oo:

being a true patriot...you much worship & explore the amazing things in your OWN country (ignoring politics & personal selfishness etc.)...before posting amazing things fro the outside world...:(

P.S......Dr. Sameera is the ONLY reverse engineer is the WHOLE of south Asia....or is it south east asia...:)

bottom line guys...sri lanka IS FREAKING AMAZING.....learn about it.....from the star gate...to this underground city.....to temples in hanging caves....

You misunderstood me.. I was saying that Sri Lanka should build its own brand of tourism using the heritage we have, places like this... ofcourse I'm excited and proud to hear the news!

As a Sri Lankan I am really proud of our heritage and the amazing stuff they make. It is similar to Egypt. There are proof that we had diplomatic relationship with Egyptians and also Romans. Yes I am proud.

But, what we do is that we always boast about out past and do not do anything similar for our future. As Sri_Lion said we only have our heritage to sell in the tourism perspective. It is our leader's and ppl's responsibility to make our past out future. But I really doubt about it....
