Google to be blocked in Srilanka

Where is it said that they are blocking google?? its just said that the Chinese web experts (who are havin allegations with google about web censorship) r gonna help Sri lanka to block OFFENSIVE websites !!!

If this blocking can minimize any Tom, Dick and Harry spreading false news which brings disgrace to Sri Lanka... especially those (P)EELAM DONKEY sites that originate from SL.. that's better!

And also these days there are news sites popping up like mushrooms god knows who runs them and the credibility of the news they publish... we saw many prime examples during the election time!

True... But then you will see only the government side of the story n as people livin in SL we all know how credible the gov media are. SO I'M DEADLY AGAINST THIS. Also most of these servers are maintained in US(Out side SL). So this move won't save the country's reputation. If the governments motive is to restrict the flow of information, I think they will head towards the social networks such as FB, Twitter, etc. I really don't want to live in a small china.

We cannot control the World, at least we must take steps to control what we can control...

No you didn't state that gov media can be trusted. But it really doesn't matter. This is about internet censorship in SL and blocking new sites is just a subset of it. What is important is why the gov is trying to impose such restrictions at this point. My view is, this is purely done for the sake of killing the competition in the news arena and to make a monopoly. If the main information is true, i.e the gov is going to impose restrictions to internet, I don't see a very bright future. Coz here people are doing crazy things under the cover of 'patriotism'

Yes.. may be... who knows, that's just another possibility... but you can always challenge the govt's decision in court, if you think they cut you off without a valid reason!

But if you don't have some sort of control over this, anyone with enough money to buy a .lk domain and hosting (which is really not much these days) could tarnish the image of the country, we saw enough example's during election time people getting divided into "party mania" and knowingly or unknowingly acting like retards lost in the confusion of what's a political party and what's a country in whole!

Well ideally govt. should becareful of what they are blocking, there's no real point in blocking sites like Google actually.. if you say you believe in proper journalism and if that's why you are saying that you see no bright future ahead, well think about this... "kalaapaththara journalism" is not proper journalism either, if we let them continue do you see a bright future then?
