Aksharaya (Letter of Fire)

Written and directed by Asoka Handagama, the movie depicts a series of psychosexual traumas within an upper middle class Sri Lankan family—a female magistrate (Piyumi Samaraweera), her elderly husband, who is a former High Court judge (Ravindra Randeniya), and their 12-year-old son (Isham Samzudeen). It explores the questions of incest, rape, murder and other dark secrets within the family and their impact on the young boy.

Without revealing the film’s complex plot, it includes a scene where the magistrate mother bathes naked with her son. When the boy later accidentally murders a prostitute, his mother attempts to cover-up the crime with tragic consequences. During the film the mother also learns that her elderly husband is in fact her own father.

DON'T CONFUSE BLOOD CANADA 2006 WITH LA COUPURE CANADA 2004, BOTH ON THE THEME OF BROTHER-SISTER SEX.
BLOOD is an adaptation of a play by the same name. It's a dark comedy that revolves around a brother and sister desperate to have sex with each other. The sexual tension between the two main (and only) characters was authentic, which they later confirmed during the Q&A. What makes the film truly unique is that it was shot in one long take, four times. And they just chose the best one. The dialogue is thick, biting, and hilarious. The characters even seriously injured each other during one take and kept on going. The entire film was shot on a Montreal sound stage, with a couple of exteriors. The director explained how he tricks the eyes of his audience into not being bored by one small set by having each room a different color, and then using an occasional split screen during rapid dialogue. I thought that was pretty cool because it totally worked on me. I like the fact that the director replaced the main characters, originally intended to be in their late forties, with young twenty-somethings. I think the sexual tension would have seemed weird and gross otherwise. Instead it was actually pretty hot. This is what Canadian film is all about.

Szep napok (2002) aka Pleasant Days

Kornl Mundruczs second feature uses improvisatory techniques and memorable imagery to tell this story of youngsters sweating out one summer in a small Hungarian town. Pter (Tams Polgr) is just out of prison and is unenamoured with life on the outside. When he witnesses a woman secretly giving birth on the floor of a laundrette, it sets in motion a tricky emotional triangle composed of himself, the childs mother Maja (Tth Orsi) and his sister Marika (Kata Wber), with whom he seems incestuously close. Mundrucz creates a world full of discomfiting mystery, sexual frustration, quiet desperation and sudden, unexpected stabs of compassion and redemption. The director enjoyed a major hit recently at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival with his modern opera film JOHANNA; this is a chance to see an early vision from a director destined for great things.

Edipo Re (1967)

Edipo Re is another of Pasolini's many adaptations, with stunning Moroccan scenery and a hot-tempered post-Freudian Oedipus whose lust for his mother begins practically as soon as he's out of the womb. Again, Pasolini's presentation is without ornament, with present-day bookends to underline the story's currency --with regard not to patricide and incest, but the willful ignorance of those in power. Franco Citti's Oedipus, rather than a wise man misled by hubris, is a vengeful opportunist; as a youth, he cheats at discus and when he finally makes his way to Thebes after slaughtering his father in a fit of pique, he vanquishes the sphinx not with cunning, but with pure rage.
All this is told by Pasolini in a stark, almost clinical style - which paradoxically engages the viewer more than a purely emotional approach would.

Delta (2008)

Synopsis: A quiet young man returns to the wild, isolated landscape of the Delta. It is a labyrinth of waterways, small islands and over-grown vegetation, where the villagers are cut off from the outside world. The young man, who has been away since early childhood, is introduced to a sister he never knew he had. She is frail and timid, but resolute when she decides to join him in his run-down hut on the shore. Together they build a house on stilts in the middle of the river, far away from everyone else. One day, they invite the villagers over to share a meal together, but it becomes apparent that the coarse locals do not accept their "unnatural" relationship...

When the others find out, however, they react in utter horror, shunning and ridiculing the couple and driving the story to a heartbreaking conclusion.

Byleth (1972) aka Byleth, il demone dell'incesto

The young Duke Lionello Shandwell (Mark Damon) morbidly loves his sister Barbara (Claudia Gravy), and when he learns Barbara is married Giordano, a middle-age man, his jealousy becomes explosive, trying to separate the consorts in every way. In the meantime some mysterious crimes are followed (victims are all women, killed with a three-points blade), so the whole village is stunned. Blood's ceremonies, insane love and incestuous relationships are the dominant elements in this film. As for its artistic value, Byleth still manages to surprise, since it represents the first genre film convinced from a perfectly pure movie-buff-like point of view, besides the incestuous thematic had not been documented on this way in an Italian horror movie. The rare German version I dubbed in Italian language is totally uncut and 82 minutes longer, instead Italian VHS version is 80'.
