In both books, the author describes the situation well enough and touches on situations that we can directly relate to. Thats where the realism lies.
Read Clerk's Breaking Strain. Its a Sci Fi short story happening on a space ship. Still you'll get the realism in that story due to the actual plot and the way the characters behave and not the setting.

Maksim Gorky used to be a realistic fiction author.I think i read most of his fiction.He uses enormous amount of detail for the setting which in turns made the setting realistic.
