Answer to your question uocanu :D

As every population on Earth, srilankans have their traditions

which distinguish them from the rest of the world.

It has been celebrated in our country for generations, since the epoch of the Kandyan Kindgom following precise
rituals based on the astrologers, to forget, at least for a day, the hatred and all the negative
thoughts towards people, restarting a new year with new hopes and expectancies..

We, as asians have always been known for these fascinating and i'd say marvelous festivals and celebrations...

I don't think there's the need to explain the importance and the reason why we celebrate that day.

It's a day in which we can show the world how admirable and what magnificent
festivals we do have. A day in which people of different religions in our country can be united with hopes and wishing
an year of prosperity and peace in our land.
I think that is the most admirable message we get during this festival.
That we, srilankans, even with different backgrounds, with different religions and beliefs can wish together.

This is the 1st new Year which can be fully celebrated after decades in which our people suffered of a disastrous war. A war which terrorized our country which made us lose loved ones. I think we should hope for a future without terrorism in our country, without wars which made millions of mothers cry.

Hatred is indeed never appeased by hatred in this world. It is appeased only by loving kindness. This is an ancient law.

This is the message and the morale containted in every religion and phylosophy in the world.

This might get simply boring if I go on...
