quite a nice movie from the 60s. Saw this on the movie channels. Pretty long movie (if I remember correctly).After David Lean turned down an offer to direct, Spartacus was originally to be directed by Anthony Mann However, at the end of the first week of shooting, Mann was fired by Douglas and Thirty-year-old Stanley Kubrick was hired to take over.
Influence of Kirk Douglas made the movie slightly differ from ,other Kubric's major directions.

I'm sure Gladiator was influenced by this movie as well. Both follow similar stories. While General Maximus was a fiction character Spartacus was very much a real person.
