The Ordinary Level exam performance in 2009 has fallen below that of the preceding year with nearly half the candidates failing to qualify to do the Advanced Level (A/L), according to the Commissioner of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe.
“272,640 students sat for the exam in 2009. Only 143,000 have good enough results to enter the Advanced Level stream, which amounts to 52.5% of the total. 129,640 students have failed to gain entrance for the A/Ls. In comparison, in 2008 around 55% of those who sat for the exam qualified for the A/Ls. Therefore, there is a slight drop in how the students have performed in 2009”, said the Commissioner. Comparisons of data from 2009 and 2008 indicate that roughly 7000 more students have failed to gain entrance for the Advanced Level classes in 2009.
Edirisinghe said that 51% of the students had passed Mathematics in 2009. A similar percentage of students had passed Mathematics in 2008. However, he noted that there was a drop in how students had performed in Science. In 2008, 46% had passed Science but in 2009 that number has come down to around 44%.
The commissioner added that 18,997 students had failed all the subjects compared with 17,000 who had failed all the subjects last year. He also stated that 16,003 students had managed to pass just 2 subjects, and 18,000 had managed to pass just 3 subjects in 2009.
Edirisinghe expressed his grave concern at how students have performed at the exam, “There is a lot of talk about those who passed the exam and have qualified to sit for the A/Ls. But we also need to focus on the other half of the students who have done very badly in the exam. The authorities need to study this situation seriously and find out the root cause for so many students performing very poorly at the exam. Something needs to be done to fix this problem”.
