Royal Panadura players assaulted in Kandy
SATURDAY, 15 MAY 2010 00:41
Royal Panadura rugby players were assaulted allegedly by players of St Sylvester’s who lost their crucial Under 20 Division 1B inter-schools rugby match played at Bogambara yesterday.
The two teams came into the game with an unbeaten record having won both their matches played earlier.
The crucial encounter saw Royal Panadura recording a close 22-20 victory after the two teams shared honours at five a piece at half time.
Eshana Fernando the master in charge of Royal Panadura said that 12 of his boys have been admitted to the Kandy hospital with severe injuries to their head and body.
Majority of them are supposed to be serious.
Eshana said the opposing players unable to stomach the defeat allegedly assaulted the boys unmercifully and though the security personals were there they were unable to bring it under control.
According to him even the officials of the losing side were helpless and were unable to bring their boys under control who randomly assaulted the players.
This is food for thought for the officials of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association who are the organizers of this tournament. Incidents of this nature should be nipped in the bud before it gets out of hand and spread like a virus.
On the other hand the school authorities should take stern action against the mischief makers who have taken the law to their hands and spoilt the name of the school.
The winners accumulated their points through a goal and three tries with the losers making up their points through four tries. Winger Chamal Chathuranga scored three tries with full back Harsha Iroshan scored the other try who also made the conversion.
