Two Somalis suspected to be from a gang of pirates were found stranded in the sea off Galle and taken in yesterday by the Sri Lankan navy, police said. They said the men were brought to the Galle Harbour in a Navy Dovra, which intercepted their boat, some 80 miles from the harbour. “We unable to verify whether these men are pirates or fishermen, as we are unable to communicate with them,” police spokesman Preshantha Jayakody said.
Meanwhile, Galle’s Deputy Habour Master Gajaba Sirimanna said according to medical tests these Somalis are in good health and might have not been in the sea for more than two days and travelling from Somalia to Sri Lanka, in such a small boat was not easy.
