Accountants la karanne, financial statement analysis, reporting, bookkeeping, GL maintenance wage ewa ok. oya hithanne oya wada ROCKET SCIENCE kiyalada? CIMA full qualified nerd kenekta wadiya hoda eagle eyes thiyena, part qualified aya innawa one tharan. That's how the practical world runs by ok. But if according to you, that eage eyes thiyena minihata Accountant putuwai, rupiyal 75,000, company car ekai nathi wenne, thihak welath CIMA full qualified nathi nisa kiyana eka, tell me how fair it is? In contrast to a developed country, the perception is you are not entitled to drive a car, unless you are a nerd :D.

u gotta fight, bawa I understand, that's a fact and there's no argument about that, but no damn fool wants to waste their best time of life in the 20s, failing and failing and failing another AL type exam, when there are many other ways to make money. That's my whole point, if you did not understand.

Do you know how many Moratuwa engineering students study for CIMA  spending that half a million some cost? It's not that if he becomes an accountant he will ever do civil engineering and vise versa. habai ape rate nerds la karana moda wada owa thamai.

This is correct in other fields too. I have many friends who has 1st class engineering degrees but they are working as management trainees at places like nestle, MAs etc. They get payed well alltirght but our country's technical task force is diminishing rapidly and as always we have to rely on foreing experts for every little construction or similar projects. Its a total waste of our work force. Just visit the coal power plant or the new port and see how those places are infested by chinese crap! If this continues , we wont be having any properly experienced engineers in our country! Thank god the doctors stick to their trade. If not the same will happen to that field too.

My point is if you are thinking of ditching your field for more money, just get the hell out of the public University and do cima on your own! There are many unlucky ppl out their dying to be come engineers while ppl like these just waste the chances of those ppl!

I personally know a guy who flunked A/Ls ( he got only 1S and 2Fs) and he finished CIMA and he's just about to finish ACCA as well. It's just the little effort that you need. This is a true story.

If you say CIMA is a very hard exam I don't know what you'll call for CFA. CFA is 1000 times harder than CIMA mt friend but there are still people who pass the exam. Life is not a bed of roses and failures are the pillars of success. Just dont hate CIMA just becuase you couldn't finsh it, where I'm today is because of CIMA and Im happy to share my knowledge with anyone who wants finish this BASIC qualification in Corporate World.

Hey!! those 19 year olds, after ALs - Read this with an open mind.

    1) CIMA is extremely tough - some people here would try to bait you saying within 2.5 years you can complete the 4 stages, like tuk tik tuk and thereafter a Rs. 100,000 Accountant job is all possible .

There are 12,000 CIMA students in SL, but only 3,000 have so far qualified as members, so the chance that you too will become a member is
only a mere 25%!! That means every 3 CIMA students out of every 4 CIMA students, will never make it to be a member in their life time.

I say that quoting the statistics published by the CIMA institute and from my own experience, because even those government uni students, who belong to the top 10% rankers of the AL students in SL, too have failed miserably in CIMA (don't even talk about Chartered), and so many of those had to drag this exam even after their 25th birthday, to qualify as passed finalists. And how expensive it is to fail in this exam do you think? And after becoming a passed finalist, you have to get 3 years of relevant work experience to qualify to become a member of that small 3,000 member community and until then you cannot apply for those very few full accountant jobs.

Now the worst part is, there are only some 10 accounting jobs advertised in the Sunday Observer/ Top jobs. But there are 12,000 CIMA students + some 30,000 Chartered students + thousands of SL uni accounting graduates to compete for that tiny little accounting job market in SL. And because of this big supply of accounting people, employers can always bargain to hire you even for just 20k. So just think how tough is your terrain going to be.

Forget those who point out what's published in the CIMA magazine, saying UK jobs are for Sri Lankans as well. I have lived and worked overseas for many years, so believe me, those UK jobs are for those who have UK experience and not for some SL experienced person. Therefore it's extremely rare, it not impossible to get into a UK job (which also needs a work visa where the employer has to first prove that there's no British national to do the same job) and if that's not the case, then all CIMA members would've already left SL for those greener pastures.

Note that your lecturers will force you to start working from the second stage itself, and that's where the cat jumps out of the bag, because people are simply too tired to study after 8 hours of work and 3 hours of lectures in the night, so no wonder they fail miserably and repeat an exam for quite a few times, and just imagine how fun do you think if you had to repeat ALs in the same fashion? Also if you do not have the luxury of a car and therefore have to spend another 1 - 2 hours to get back home, in a crowded bus, just ask yourself how practical it is to study some boring small letters and numbers.

I talk from my experience and if you want to get further proof, ask a member who had your own AL ranking but do not put all your hopes, money and happiness, in the words of some extremely bright CIMA member, who completed CIMA in 2.5 years in that tuk, tik, tuk fashion.

As a 19 year old fresh youth, know what you doing and be responsible for your actions, as wasted time, money and opportunity can never be replenished. Those who stagnate in CIMA for years are living zombies because they have a deep rooted belief that they cannot be happy in their life, without becoming a CIMA member. Best thing to do is to start your own business or to get enrolled in an affordable degree, if you do not have that extreme brightness of finishing this exam within 2.5 years or even 3 years. Otherwise, you will slowly get old doing nothing but stagnating in this boring exam, where some 9,000 others like you are already stagnating.

Believe me life is much more fun, if you have even your small business or can do a private uni degree, as the curriculum is more relaxed. If you want to be successful in life, do not rely on others to teach you what to do, but rely on your natural talents and ambitions just like every other successful person did. For e.g. if you are good at electric work, do a technical course and go Dubai and make money as an electrician and you will be paid number of times more at 20 than if you still have to do a boring accounts clerk job at 25. In the same sense, once you start your first CSE account, that's your first business for example .

Put your pride and what your parents think you should do, aside and do what makes you rich fast, because parents may not last long to fund your expensive CIMA drag. Or else 3/4th of those who read my small note, will regret in couple of years for not listening to this SL born Aussie, who had to go through all that crap to be successful at 30, because I did not have someone to tell me the same words of wisdom at that playful age of 19 .

    Cheers!

    Nalin

well the point you trying to emboss is quite clear but the 1st thing we all need to its a damn huge world & a market out there which has a infinite no of opportunities with the same no of academic programms to support them, so this cima is rather a fashion which has its meaningless dominance crated by the ppl who can afford it also who are the ppl who has another wing to hang if they loose cima, but the sad part is here in sl (the country where still there are ppl who does not earn 2$ per day but feed a whole family) the social segmant which does not have dat fortune but totally reply on this cima cos of the image, reputation or watever created by the initially mentiond society, will be making a do or die decission at the time they start cima.

I would like to point out another area in this so called corporate system & traingnis which most of ud does not see, in any of these foreign courses do they teach a single paragraph abt our own country & its traditions?? do they play the national anthem at least at a inagural ceremony??? that 25% as u mentioned will passs the damn ting with flying colours but dat will be only the sylabbys till top cima, if u r to work with ppl (unless u r a total stupid geek who wasnna live in the cyberspace) & in this country, there is a lot u need to learn, ethics & values for an example. But in the sl uni education all these are inducted to ur heads, whn u passout u enter the society as a complete man (unless u r an victim of Udul premarathne or some other jvp bastrd) who has the capacity to consider every aspect of the society & business whn u take decissions in stratergic positions. but the sad part is our ppl never vallue the local thing, they always try to dominate this forign educatiuon over our own great education which is designed to cater ur own country. Sudda left us... but still there are its deamons here n there.

if someone cared to read this thread, great , u have some scope. all u need is some vision, together we all can change things. dont pay the west, just pay a sl university & save that money in ur own motherland which will be used in the future for some propper educatiion for ur children, also it will cost u only a minor amount whn comparing to those $$$ u pay for cima or watsoever.

to end just few words abt me... (not to boast but if sm1 need to get an example) I didnt get a chance to enter uni cos i was guided through a different steam by my parents who was influenced by the society dat it is the only stream for a man to have a life, so i failed A/L, however i found severla jobs n worked for like 3 yerrs, den while working i started to do some of those courses in sl uni's, finally i ended up with an MBA(Merit) frm uni of colombo, thinking of sratring the PhD reaesrch soon, I work in the best complany in sl for a salary no one can imagine. & there are many full Cima mamabers with top cima n all under me. So the lession i would like to give to all the bothers n sisters out there is, discover ur core competinces & work on they, excell at what u r gud at, dats d only way to surview....

You are very correct to say that, my brother . pandithayanta edande yanna baha kiyanawane. I knew this engineer grad who went to work at a audit firm for the Rs. 2,000 salary for 4 years because he wanted to prove to the world that he's versatile . modaya kiyala marannaya.

Go and tell your story to that 9,000 odd stagnating CIMA students, today! if you are saying that even the ones who belong outside the 4th quartile of AL passers, can pass CIMA, then tell me why the member/ student ratio stagnates at 1:4 and why even the 1st quartile AL passers, being the state uni students, drag this exam even after their 25th birthday?

I am a guy with an MBA ok. Just as CFA is hard an MBA too is hard. But get your facts straight before talking, as CFA and MBA are just secondary qualifications, which are only an option, so I do not know why you comparing CIMA with CFA? api me katha karanne CIMA nathuwa, degree nathuwa, jeewithe lost wela inna dasa dahas ganan tharuna kollo, kello wenuwen.

You seem like a nerd/ poth gulla and I see that you are offended by me telling the truth about CIMA, to come to conclusion that I hate CIMA. It's not that I hate CIMA you fool. It's just that, I belong to the vast majority of people, who prefer to touch the nose, closest way, without having to go round the neck. api jeewith wenna asa minissu, nathiwa widawanna asa minissu nemei.

And if you think CIMA is the only & only basic qualification to the corporate world, let me remind you that, most SL ad for accountants, are ready to also accommodate those ones with a degree in accounting. Go check for yourself, if you think I am talking bull here. Therefore mama methana hadanne, to give the message that, look at the statistics before holding this tiger's tail, as you are much better off doing an affordable pvt degree or doing your own business kiyala.

Your ignorance just proves, how a fraction of people like you can make a youth lost in life, just like what happened to me .

there's no point of talking with you my firend. I really do understand your misery with CIMA. I feel very sorry for you. You got a MBA and Mervin Silva got a Phd.

But for the people who are watching this thread let me give you some statistics of May 2010.
There are 355 passed finalists (best ever so far), 85 new members, 38 new fellows...
You just cant pass CIMA with the book knowledge (like in Ols and ALs) you should know how to apply it in the given scenario. Thats why a lot of people who have excelled in ALs not doing their best in CIMA.

Its your choice..open you eyes and see the world..

after all if every Tom,Dick and Harry(like Nalin whatever) can pass CIMA whats the point? Why CFA is highly recognized one factor is the quality and the relevance of the syallabus and the other factor is Demand and Supply concept. You can apply the same to this. But to a lesser extent.

I hope you all got my point. In fact we would like if there are idiots like Nalin whatever to come in to these sort of forums and show there ignorance. There'll be lees people who follow CIMA and the demand will go high up for the existing members.

ha ha. a very reliable source is teaching us about CIMA. that's why he got a shiny red star below his user name. What a joke!!!!
