Hi guys,

First of all, this thread is not for those extremely bright, nerds and bookworms but only for the majority of us who will never make it to the top 10% of the AL passers, to qualify to do a free bachelors degree at a state university, even if we try the exam 3 times. So please do not bother to read this, if you are already confident that you can get A plus for all three commerce papers.

Do you like to complete your degree by 19 or latest 20 :)? I think any idiot would say yes. Then please do yourself a favour and get yourself enrolled in one of those recognized institutes like ACBT, ICBT, SLIIT etc., etc., etc., right after you finish your OLs at 16. The cost can range up to 2 millions, which is not cheap, I admit. But be mindful that, cost of doing the same degree abroad is almost 5 times more.

But if you instead try your luck to earn a free degree at a state university, by sitting at the AL class for 2 years at school, there is a 90% chance (this is statistics), that you may never get there. So you too might leave your school after 13 years, as a disappointed 19 year old and will be further disappointed to find another 19 year old almost finished with his degree at ACBT. And also do not forget that even if you are lucky to join a state university at 20, from your first shy at ALs, you may not finish your degree till 25 for numerous reasons, relevant only to those state universities, which we all know . And if you are a try hard chap, who is ready to take the boring ALs for another 2 times, just add another 3 years to this process

Please don't become a joke of the crowd by not making the most out of your opportunities .

If your parents can afford a private degree for you, just go for it :).

If you are doing AL in Maths, you get very good skills which you can use anywhere for the rest of your life. You will not get those skills by doing even a IT degree.
Anyway if you are just targeting a job then better quit the school after OLs.
If you are doing commerce for ALs then better quit and start a business/finance degree.

sry....am 21 years old... :sorry:  bt I am nt a extremely bright, also nt a nerd and a bookworm :)

U r correct at some points bt there z some point that i can't agree with u brother....

First of all, I have no A/Ls..I didnt try for 2nd shy..am 21...also am studying one of institutes u mentioned. I'll gt my degree next year(if i continue passing subjects with no repeats  )

I had many friends who left the institution in before they gt the degree bcoz they can't manage it...bt many of them had enough money( or say more than enough...)

    I did a/l in math stream...anyway I failed. But the knowledge,experience I gained in those 2 yrs r amazing...Don't throw it way that easy...
that knowledge is helping me throughout these years...experience also..

There r reasons why should we face A/L before entering higher education.
It doesn't matter that u pass or fail. bcoz u know the path..bt u should try..:yes:

    Good luck :)

First of all brother, this thread is only for the commerce guys, as I am more familiar with that field. But the concept is always true - try to reach your nose the closest way  That is also in line with what Lord Buddha has said that one must not delay what he has to do, if he is to avoid disappointment.

no body wants to repeat a exam, not just you . It's just human nature to hate what you don't like.

oyata wuneth, nodana gihin atharamung wuna eka.

if you do second shy, you will be 20 plus by the time results come, and there's still no guarantee that you will be selected to the uni. private degree ekak karanan, you will be more likely, earning atleast Rs. 20,000 as your first salary by then.

Can't agree with u bro.I personally think that students should at least sit for the A/L exam.It is in it's self a qualification. For example think that you dont sit a/l s and enroll in one of the above programs but halfway due to some unforeseen financial difficulties u hav to stop. Then all you have as a qualification is your O/L results.

First of all, I clearly mentioned in my OP that, I am speaking for the commerce students only.

So if one thinks that, spending 2 years studying Maths for ALs, is a life long useful experience, that's not an issue for me.

But I speak from my own experience about the commerce students, who find that they wasted 2 years, once they cannot qualify to enter the state universities. At the end, some of them also go on to say that, the 2 years stagnation was "fun". It is sad that people think 18 and 19 years of life are worth to spend inside a 4 wall classroom to maintain 80% attendance, spend loads & loads of time and money going to sardine packed tuition classes and finally finding that they still cannot enter a state university and that somebody else has even finished the degree by then .

Unforeseen circumstances can even happen during those 6 days of AL exam, am I wrong ? Haven't you heard stories of candidates getting infected with measles, chicken pox or even losing their loved ones just before the exam day? Tsunami itself could've happened in August, not December .

And if you thought ALs can get you a job these days, just go to the Fort station on a week day .

Accounting is a hot field in SL. Therefore I would also add a specialization in accounting to the BSc in Business Administration/ Management degree (if possible), as the accounting vacancies, generally ask for either a degree in accounting or CIMA or Chartered.

You seem to have missed my point.Firstly I did not say that doing a/l s in it's self would get you a job.I merely pointed out that it is at least a minor qualification you can fall back on if for some reason you can not complete your higher education.
Secondly I was talking about financial problems a student can come across when doing these degrees which may cause him to stop.
I did not say that A/Ls were some magical exam where nothing could possibly go wrong;)

I did my AL in 2000 (becos had no choise) flunked the exams, and i think its better to do a Degree straight away after O/L or join NAITA or do a City and Gills technical course than wasting time to do AL. this is my idea.

I wish some one told me the above when i completed my O/L...
