An EK member, asked me for advise with regard to studying and working in the US, the answer I beleive would be useful for many of you, although it's about Aus.

My opinion

With the global financial crisis, almost every developed country severely cut down their immigration intake.

Now down here in Australia, until 2010, anybody could get Permanent Residency by completing just 2 years of studies, which is absolutely not the case anymore. So lots and lots of international students, got stranded, who sold/ mortgaged everything back home, to study here with the sole aim of obtaining PR. But the option of finding a job and getting sponsored for PR is still there, but it's extremely difficult, if not impossible, as 99.9% of the Australian employers on www.seek.com.au mention in the job ad itself that they only need people with Aussie citizenship.

So if you are planning to go abroad for studies, remember two things, crystal clearly,

1) times have changed and now it is extremely difficult to obtain PR and settle down, in these traditionally immigrant welcoming countries.

2) the same degree can be completed at 1/5th of the cost from ACBT, ANC etc., from Sri Lanka itself.

So be wise, or else, you too would end up having to come back to SL, with just a degree, obtained at an exorbitant prize. With the present entry level SL salaries for degree holders, you may never be able to recover that cost, from working in SL.

Cheers!

u can complete the same degree in places like acbt & anc but its really worth it if you could get that degree certificate from a uni like Deaking!
recognition & value of it is way higher than a lankan college degree.. :)

Well you can get the exact same Deakin degree from SLIIT and Edith Cowan degree from ACBT. And ACHE offers a degree from a good state university from the US, I think it's North Dakota State Uni.

I hope that's what you also meant and not going abroad to do the same.

    before you go anywhere

study the rules & plan what you want to do

its cost effective to study a foreign degree in sri lanka & get some work experience

after that you can look at Canada, Australia, New Zeland

these 3 countries have permanent resident programs for skilled workers

if you have a lot of money go & study abroad

Canada, Australia, New Zeland are the top places

UK & US have no clear path to 'permanent resident' for skilled workers

    see you in nz/aussi :D

    Nalin,

    you posted some incorrect information

sponsorship from an employer for PR in aussi is just one type of visa

    Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 121/856)

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 119/857)

foreign students have the option of other types of PR if they can't get sponsorship from an employer

Skilled – Independent (Residence) Visa (Subclass 885)

A permanent visa for eligible overseas students who have obtained an Australian qualification in Australia as a result of at least two (2) years study and for holders of certain temporary visas with skills in demand in Australia. Applicants are not sponsored and must pass a points test.

Skilled – Sponsored (Residence) Visa (Subclass 886)

A permanent visa for eligible overseas students who have obtained an Australian qualification in Australia as a result of at least two (2) years study and for holders of certain temporary visas with skills in demand in Australia. For applicants not able to meet the Skilled – Independent pass mark, who have either a relative in Australia to sponsor them or a nomination from a State or Territory government. Applicants must pass a points test lower than that for the Skilled – Independent visa

Skilled – Regional (Residence) Visa (Subclass 887)

A permanent visa for eligible provisional visa holders who have lived for at least two (2) years and worked for at least one (1) year in a Specified Regional Area in Australia.

Skilled – Regional Sponsored (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 487)

A three (3) year provisional visa for eligible overseas students and holders of certain temporary visas who can meet the lower pass mark for this visa. Applicants must be either sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area of Australia or nominated by a participating state/territory government. After living for two (2) years and working for at least one (1) year in a Specified Regional Area, applicants can apply for a permanent visa.

Skilled – Graduate (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 485)

An 18 month temporary visa for overseas students who have obtained an Australian qualification in Australia as a result of at least two (2) years study. Allows applicants who are unable to pass the points test to remain in Australia for 18 months to gain the skills and experience needed to apply for a permanent or provisional General Skilled Migration visa. No points test applies.

lkdood, I think you jumped the gun!

If you read the fine print properly, you will understand that, except for the relative sponsored PR scheme, rest of them mention about having relevant work experience. Now that's where the cat jumps out of the bag as I already mentioned in my OP, that 99.9% of employers do not prefer to hire international students. Now that's a fact.

You will say here that, sure no problem, go back to SL and get that experience. Why not? But, my point is it is 80% more cost effective to do the same degree from SL itself and then apply for the skilled migration program.
