Sri Lanka on Saturday set a Guinness World Record for brewing the largest cup of tea that served approximately 32,000 people.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) organized the event as part of a publicity campaign for Viva, a drink containing milk, wheat and malted barley that is popular in Sri Lanka.

“We wanted to do something different, something that people would talk about for months to follow,” said Chairman and Managing Director of GSK Sacthi Thomas, speaking to Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror. “Not only did we want a successful launch campaign, but we also wanted to make the country proud of its signature drink, tea.”

The brewing began around 3 a.m. on Saturday with the boiling of 1,000 gallons of water. That process took about three hours, according to officials. The cup required 141 pounds of tea along with 1,900 pounds of powdered milk (in this case Viva) and 400 pounds of sugar. After the record was officially broken, officials drove around Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, serving the tea to bystanders.

Guinness adjudicator from London, Alison Ozanne, monitored the tea-making process and presented the certificate to Thomas.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksahttp://www.allvoices.com/people/Mahinda_Rajapaksa, and Sri Lankan cricket captain kumar Sangakkarahttp://www.allvoices.com/people/Kumar_Sangakkara attended the event. The campaign was publicized only days before the tea brewing, but GSK had been planning it for months.

A health center in the town of Fort Scott, Kansas, claimed the previous world record for the largest cup of tea. That cup, brewed on Sept. 26, 2009, contained just under 800 gallons of tea.
