The already battered Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) ran into more problems after the board’s media partner Ten Sports pulled out from the coverage of the three match ODI series against the West Indies that gets underway on Monday.
Cricket Interim Committee Chief D.S. de Silva and Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga were conspicuously absent from the press briefing held yesterday in Colombo to launch the series and Acting Chief Executive Officer Ajit Jayasekara was left to answer questions fired by the media. Jayasekara announced that local television giant Rupavahini will telecast the series, but it will be without an international coverage.
Cricket administrators have come in for intense criticism after they were forced to pull the three match series from Hambantota and R. Premadasa Stadium after the International Cricket Council demanded the exclusivity period for the World Cup venues after it emerged that construction is still not complete at the venues.
Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara put on a brave face when he said his job is to play cricket and couldn’t worry on what was beyond his control.
SLC hastily arranged the three match series at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds and the games now will be played on the 31st of January and 3rd and 6th of February. All games will be day matches.
It was also revealed that the board is looking at making the two warm up games prior to the World Cup into day-night matches.
The ODI series against West Indies was originally scheduled for December last year, but was cancelled due to wet weather and Darren Sammy, the West Indian captain said that he’s using the series as a warm up for the World Cup.
Both sides have named their World Cup squads for the series.
Meanwhile SLC announced that the entire collection from the gates will be presented to the flood victims. Tickets have been priced from Rs. 3000 to Rs. 50.
