    Most Wanted Smartphones of 2011

    HTC Arrive

    15htcarrive.jpg

The HTC Arrive isn’t breaking any performance records, running the same ol' 1GHz Snapdragon processor; it doesn’t even support 4G. It is, however, the very first Windows Phone 7 device available from Sprint. It may not have all of the bells and whistles of the newest phones, but it does have Microsoft’s latest version of Window Phone 7.

    Motorola Atrix

    14atrix.jpg

In many ways perfect, featuring a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a 4-inch HD display, 4G data (though it’s only HSPA+), and it’s actually available right now. But what makes the Motorola Atrix so interesting is the laptop docking station. The dock is really nothing more than a screen, battery, keyboard, and some USB ports, but it instantly boots up into a simplistic netbook interface, all running directly from the phone. Truly our first foray in creating a Smartphone-Laptop hybrid.

    Xperia Arc

    13xperiaarc.jpg

Sleek style meets amazing functionality with the Xperia Arc. At just 8.7mm thick, it’s more than just a pretty face. Its 4.2-inch display is integrated with Sony HDTV technology, making the Arc an amazing multimedia device. Add in Sony’s Exmor R image sensor, capable of taking high quality photos even extremely low light conditions, and you have something pretty impressive indeed. The Xperia Arc is expected to be available in Europe soon; there are no known plans for the US.

    Blackberry Apollo

    12bbapollo.jpg

Though far from official, the Blackberry Apollo is expected to be a mid-range device, providing a needed hardware upgrade to the current Blackberry line, though not quite full of the latest, fastest tech. However, it does feature an NFC chip, something only just starting to appear in Smartphones. Should they actually catch on, NFC chips will allow you to make secure purchases, look up information, or exchange contact lists just by touching your phone to another NFC device

    Blackberry Torch 2

    11bbtorch2.jpg

The Blackberry Torch 2 should ease the worry that BB hardware is falling below the curve. Everything is still whispers and rumors, but the Torch 2 is expected to leap into the modern era with a 1.2GHz processor, hopefully letting it keep up with (or perhaps outpace) the rest of this years Smartphones. There has also been mention of an integrated NFC chip, suggesting that RIM may be outfitting all of its upcoming models with this technology of the future.
    HTC Thunderbolt

    10thunderbolt.jpg

Despite being later than expected, the HTC Thunderbolt is Verizon’s very first 4G LTE Smartphone, boasting speeds up to 25 Mbps, so streaming HD movies is a very real possibility. Throw in the 4.3-inch display, and it’s obvious that the Thunderbolt makes for an ideal mobile media device, though its single core processor and slightly stale version of Android (2.2 Froyo) are a little disappointing. AT&T’s Inspire 4G is essentially the same device, save for a much slower HSPA+ radio.
    Xperia Play

When word finally came down that the PlayStation Phone was to be the Xperia Play, a PS certified device, all the anticipation quickly turned to disappointment. The Xperia Play’s hardware is a bit mediocre, built almost entirely on last year’s tech, but word has it that the Play is shaping up to be quite the capable gaming device. Its slide-out controls, complete with shoulder bumpers, make it well suited for gaming; it also brings a full-featured PlayStation store with several titles.
    LG Optimus 2X

The LG Optimus 2X was the very first dual-core Smartphone, running NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor, making it capable of 1080p video recording, 1080p playback through HDMI, and enhanced gaming graphics. Already available in Europe and Asia; coming to the US as the T-Mobile G2x; it will be compatible with AT&T’s HSPA+ network. This means the G2x will be a quad band UMTS/HSPA+ device, of which very few exist (even fewer with such powerful hardware); it could be popular as an unlocked device.
    Infuse 4G

Featuring a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display and ultra thin design, the Infuse 4G's single core 1.2GHz Hummingbird processor still manages to keep up and is capable of recording 1080p video. While the name suggests that it is a 4G device, it runs on AT&T’s HSPA+ 4G network, considerably slower than its upcoming LTE alternative. Perhaps its greatest shortcoming, though, is its older version of Android (2.2 Froyo), which, given Samsung’s track record, may take quite a while to be upgraded.

    Droid Bionic

The Droid Bionic runs on the lightning fast 4G LTE network, but features a 1GHz dual-core processor and 4.3-inch qHD display (940x960), pairing enhanced data speeds with solid processing power. It doesn’t skimp on anything, including just about every feature you might want: HDMI output, HD video recording, and front facing camera. Although a somewhat bulky device, its all-around high end specs will very likely make it one of Verizon’s best sellers for the remainder of the year.

    LG Optimus 3D

Poised to take another first is the LG Optimus 3D, which could become the world’s first Smartphone with a stereoscopic 3D display (glasses-free). With its unique display and dual 5MP camera design, it is capable of both taking and displaying 3D images and 720p videos, and in 2D mode, it can also record in full 1080p. Coming to AT&T in the near future as the Thrill 4G (yes, that 4G will be the HSPA+ 4G, not LTE), it's rumored that a T-Mobile version will follow shortly after.

    EVO 3D

The EVO 3D will offer some significant benefits. For starters, it features a 4.3-inch qHD stereoscopic 3D display as well as a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, but perhaps most importantly, the EVO 3D will launch with Android version 2.3, though the Optimus might have upgraded by then, considering the EVO 3D is expected sometime this summer. Apart from that, it offers nearly all of the same features, such as 3D photos and 720p video capture as well as 1080p 2D recording.

    HD7

The HD7S is a Windows Phone 7 device that doesn’t bring much in the way of revolutionary hardware. What it does offer is the latest version of WP7 and a rich multimedia experience. It features a 4.3-inch Super LCD display ideal for high quality movies and full web browsing. It also has an excellent 5MP camera with dual-LED flash, capable of taking impressive photos and recording 720p HD video. It brings features to the table that many AT&T customers have been waiting a long time for.

    Galaxy S II

It’s no surprise that people have very high expectations for the Galaxy S II. While its specs are still rumored, it’s expected to run Samsung’s own dual-core Exynos processor, which includes the Mali-400MP GPU, capable of outperforming Tegra 2 chips by a fair margin. As an added bonus, it’s also a considerably sleek device, and currently measuring in at just 8.5mm thick, it stands a chance to take the record for thinnest Smartphone once released.
    5th gen iPhone

Nothing can quite beat the hype Apple conjures up and speculation about the 5th gen iPhone is all over the place, from slide-out QWERTY to color themes. Most likely to feature an underclocked version of the A5 processor found in the iPad 2, the screen may be upped to 4 inches; the res will likely remain in the qHD realm, and while 3D is very unlikely, it isn’t out of the question. Needless to say, whenever the launch date is, there will be long lines at the Apple store.
