Actually I don't drink much either. Just some beer and socialization. I was reading about the beaches, and I guess most tourists get a beer.

I never drink at home, but if someone is on vacation, they have different habits Which would make me curious about pubs in Colombo and beer brands and drinking habits as well in SL

I don't want people to think I'm only interested in beer though! Actually between Kandy and the many beaches, it looks like there is a lot to see in Sri Lanka! Colombo looks real interesting too! Mount Latavia (or something like that, as well).

I have a guide book, LONELY PLANET guide, so been reading that quite a bit

I will also cease making any India connections/inquiries....seems like Sri Lankans are proud to be different... So, I'll just make Sri Lanka inquires instead...

Is alcohol more popular with the younger generations? Men and women?

My perception of India is that alcohol is only in a few of the main cities, and mostly men drink, except for the Indian women who live and visit from the UK, etc.?

All major brands can be bought from any tourist hotel in SL

I've been reading a little bit about it, about Colombo, Hiddakuwa, Kandy, Mirissa, and such. Looks like a great place.

I've also assumed that Sri Lankans were like Indians...quite conservative, don't drink, etc. But, it looks like it is possible to get a beer, and socialize and such as well. Although, my impression is that that probably isn't very popular or common though.

Been studying that cricket is popular (sadly I don't know much about it!). Also, read that there seem to be a lot of Colombo Fashion Shows...although don't know if that is something that is just popular on the internet only. Who knows.

Anyways, just joined the forum, and hope to learn a lot more about Sri Lanka!!

Then its Okey...no problem...tourist hotels have plenty of beer....Mount Latavia has hundreds of hotels facing the sea...I can imagine you enjoy the evening sun, sitting with beer and a book in the balcony of a Mount Latavia hotel

Beer is widely available as well as hard liquor. Especially at popular tourist destinations.

pubs are limited to a few cities out side of colombo. What you get all over the country are liquor stores. So pub habits is limited to a few.

Discos though, will have a lot of young people. Mostly younger people from the higher classes. My impression anyways.

Than if you go to the beaches and such. Mostly tourists drinking, and probably socializing with each other. You'd see some locals at the beaches, but avoiding getting suntans and such. So, maybe just go with their family, and then go back home?

Or do you have locals (Sri Lankans) at all the same beaches with the tourists as well? But maybe avoiding suntanning? (I've lived and taught english in Japan for awhile, and most all asians I know, generally try to avoid suntanning). While most all european/american/australians, we all want to get a tan when we see beaches!

Yes! locals can be found almost anytime in famous beaches. True, they do not do suntaning. What they do is swiming in the shallow ocean, playing informal water sports in the shallow ocean, sit on the beach with their partners under umbrellas, play cricket and perhaps football in the beach.....and so on...

does the sites, books you read about SL ever have any photos of the locals ? we hardly need to tan ourselves. Europians, Americans, Australians are mostly pale skinned, hence the need to get a tan.
The beaches are common for all so you'll find locals as well as tourists.

Dont know if you've come accross this article already. would be quite useful for tourists. Might give you an insight in to our drinking habits plus it lists some of the best watering holes in the country for tourists. Most of these places are great for socializing as well. Check it out.

Western perspective, even african-american guys will wear swimsuits at the beach. Just a cultural thing that goes beyond tanning.

Even me, I get sunburned too easily! So, I don't tan that easily, just turn red! But, I just put on more lotion to avoid sunburn, because covering up is against our culture at the beach.

If you came to Sri Lanka in this week of April(11-17) Sinhala Hindu new year days you may see the effect of Alcohol here. Some people not only drinking it but also bathing

cultural difference indeed. walking around in underwear in public is not in our culture so you're not gonna find much next to nude locals. There's a second reason as well, locals without clothes under the hot sun gets even darker that they already are. So the clothes stays.

jest for fun lot of people come to my country they don't even really know what it is really is. so my advise is Sri lanka is a great country jest come along find a good person who know the country and travel with him little into inside including famous places they tell...
