Yeaaap, an absolutely retarded tax structure for automobiles. Kinda like this hole that the gov has got into over the decades (kept increasing taxes on vehicles since the 90`s). Now it's all so tangled up in the economy that no government is capable enough to work on a solution (for affordable vehicle prices)..
People absolutely value personal mobility. Governments should not take it away just because a country is small and because there`s traffic congestion (there are so many other solutions to address traffic). Even in a tiny place like Singapore, with one of the best public transport systems in the world, people are paying SG 100k+ for a 10 year car permit. These are not all rich people, just upper-middle class families who value a vehicle to take their kids to places and stuff..
Yep, there are other ways to reduce road congestion. Introduce a hefty entry fee for Colombo, increase parking charges, and strictly enforce towing penalties for violations. That way, even if people own cars, they’ll think twice before using them unless it’s absolutely necessary.
But we still have a long way to go with public transport, certainly not with rusted trains and poorly managed, aggressively driven buses.
