The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) today successfully conducted the first test flight of its upgraded Kfir C12 fighter aircraft at SLAF Base Katunayake, marking a major milestone in the modernization of the country's fighter fleet. The test flight was carried out following the successful completion of an extensive programme of ground validation, systems integration and technical testing under the Kfir modernization project.
The flight was witnessed by Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Sampath Thuyacontha and Commander of the Air Force Bandu Edirisinghe, together with senior Air Force officers and representatives involved in the upgrade programme.

ශ්රී ලංකා ගුවන් හමුදා කටුනායක කඳවුරේදී නවීකරණය කළ ප්රථම 'Kfir C12' ප්රහාරක ජෙට් යානයේ පරීක්ෂණ පියාසැරිය අද (11) සාර්ථකව සිදුකළ බව ගුවන් හමුදාව පවසයි.
මෙය ගුවන් හමුදාව සතු 'Kfir' ජෙට් ප්රහාරක බලඇණිය නවීකරණය කිරීමේ ව්යාපෘතියේ සුවිශේෂී සන්ධිස්ථානයක් ලෙස සැලකේ.
'සිංහ පැටවා' ලෙසින් හඳුන්වනු ලබන අංක 10 ප්රහාරක බලඝණයට අයත් මෙම ප්රහාරක ජෙට් යානා නවීකරණ වැඩසටහන Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) සහ ශ්රී ලංකා ගුවන් හමුදාව එක්ව ක්රියාත්මක කරන ඒකාබද්ධ ව්යාපෘතියක්ය.
මෙම 'Kfir C12' ගුවන් යානය නවීන digital glass cockpit avionics පද්ධතියකින් සමන්විත වන අතර, එමඟින් නියමු කාර්යභාරය සැලකිය යුතු ලෙස පහසු කර මෙහෙයුම් කාර්යක්ෂමතාව ඉහළ නංවා ඇති බව ගුවන් හමුදාව පවසයි.
එයට අමතරව වැඩිදියුණු කළ සංවේදක සහ multi-mode radar හැකියාවන් මඟින් ඉලක්ක හඳුනාගැනීම සහ තත්ත්ව දැනුවත්භාවය (Situational Awareness) වැඩිදියුණු කර ඇත.
තවද නවීන navigation, communication සහ network-centric සම්බන්ධතා පද්ධති ඒකාබද්ධ කිරීම මඟින් මෙහෙයුම් සම්බන්ධීකරණය සහ නිරවද්යතාව ශක්තිමත් කර ඇති අතර, precision weapon integration සහ advanced weapons management systems මඟින් ගුවනේ සිට ගුවනට (air-to-air) සහ ගුවනේ සිට ගොඩබිමට (air-to-ground) මෙහෙයුම් හැකියාවන් සැලකිය යුතු ලෙස වැඩිදියුණු කර තිබේ.
මෙම නවීකරණය හේතුවෙන් Kfir C12 යානය බහුකාර්ය (Multi Role) යානයක් ලෙස පරිවර්තනය වී ඇති බව ගුවන් හමුදාව පසසයි.
මෙම නවීකරණය කරන ලද Kfir ප්රහාරක ජෙට් යානය විවිධ උස මට්ටම් යටතේ තවත් පරීක්ෂණ පියාසැරි 5ක් පමණ සිදු කිරීමට නියමිතය.
ඉදිරි දිනවලදී කටුනායක ගුවන් හමුදා කඳවුර අවට ප්රදේශවල ජනතාවට මෙම නවීකරණය කරන ලද ප්රහාරක ජෙට් යානයේ ගුවන් ක්රියාකාරීත්වය නිරීක්ෂණය කිරීමේ අවස්ථාව හිමිවනු ඇත.
මෙය ශ්රී ලංකා ගුවන් හමුදාවේ නවීන තාක්ෂණික හැකියාවන් පිළිබඳ ජනතාවට සජීවී අත්දැකීමක් ලබා දෙන විශේෂ අවස්ථාවක් ලෙසද සැලකේ.
මෙම ව්යාපෘතිය යටතේ ශ්රී ලංකා ගුවන් හමුදාව සතු Kfir C2, Kfir C7 වර්ගයේ ප්රහාරක ජෙට් යානා 4ක් මෙන්ම Kfir TC2 වර්ගයේ පුහුණු ජෙට් යානයක්ද මේ වනවිට Kfir C12 තාක්ෂණික ප්රමිතිය දක්වා උසස් කිරීම සිදුවෙමින් පවතී.

IAI to Upgrade the Sri Lankan Air Force’s Kfir Aircraft

June 30, 2021- Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) recently signed a contract, worth USD $50 million with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defense to upgrade Kfir aircraft for the Sri Lankan Air Force. The deal includes replacing the aircraft’s basic avionics with the advanced 4+ generation fighter aircraft avionics in order to one day integrate advanced radar, sensors, communication systems, and new helmets. The upgrade process will also include transfer of knowledge and skills for refurbishment to Sri Lankan Air Force personnel. The upgrades will be completed in cooperation with Sri Lanka’s Air Force and in their local facilities.
The Kfir, when first developed, was a game changer on the battlefield with its ability to carry heavy ammunition (thousands of tons) and reach enemy targets in a precise manner. The decision to upgrade the aircraft now, was based in part, on the successful completion of this process in the Columbian Air Force. In 2012 and 2018, the Columbian Air Force’s Kfir fleet participated in the United States Red Flag exercise, alongside the U.S. Air Force and other air forces. The Kfir displayed exceptional capabilities throughout the exercise, far better than the F15, F16 and other participating aircraft.
IAI Executive VP and GM of IAI’s Aviation Group, Yossi Melamed, said, “I am proud that IAI’s Kfir has been chosen by customers around the world, including in the United States and as the Columbian Air Force’s primary fighter jet. I am grateful to Sri Lanka’s Air Force for choosing to renew their Kfir selection and continue using the Kfir as their Multi-Role Combat Aircraft. I believe this deal is an early step in preparing for future upgrades to the advanced model KNG (Kfir New Generation).”
