Cyberbullying, online harassment
Depending on whether you want technical assistance to get content taken down or want to pursue legal action against the harasser, you can reach out to the following organizations:
1. Sri Lanka CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team)
If you are dealing with cyberbullying, fake profiles, or online defamation, CERT can help you by providing technical guidance and coordinating with social media platforms to remove harmful content or secure compromised accounts.
How to report: Send an email to
[email protected]
What to include: Provide links to the offending profiles/posts, clear screenshots of the harassment, and a brief description of the situation.
Hotline: You can call 101 for urgent cybersecurity assistance.
Note: While their general inquiry email is
[email protected], they explicitly request that social media incidents be sent specifically to
[email protected].
2. Computer Crime Investigation Division (CCID) of the Police
If the harassment involves severe threats, blackmail, or criminal behavior (such as non-consensual sharing of intimate images), you should lodge a formal complaint with the police. The CCID is the specialized unit equipped to track IP addresses and identify anonymous perpetrators.
Location: CCID Headquarters, 4th Floor, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Colombo 01.
Online Safety Portal: You can also submit complaints digitally via the Tell IGP service or the dedicated online safety reporting links found on the Sri Lanka Police or CERT websites.
Important Step Before Reporting: Do not delete the messages, comments, or profiles out of anger or fear. Take clear screenshots that capture the user handles, timestamps, and full URLs if possible. This digital evidence is vital for both CERT and the police to take effective action.
