Sivarasa Anojan, a young Sri Lankan worker from Natpiddimunai in Kalmunai, was originally arrested in Saudi Arabia following an online dispute tied to local religious discussions back home. Saudi authorities detained him over a social media comment deemed offensive to Islam.
Although Anojan quickly removed the post and issued a public apology, the Al-Ahsa Criminal Court initially sentenced him to five years in prison, along with an exorbitant fine of three million Saudi Riyals. Seeking relief from the harsh penalty, his family appealed the decision; however, local reports state that the appellate court dramatically elevated his penalty to a death sentence under Saudi Arabia’s strict laws governing blasphemy. With the case now at a critical precipice, his family and community leaders are urgently calling on the Sri Lankan government to initiate high-level diplomatic protocols to seek a royal pardon.
