“A cricket crazy youth in Tamil Nadu cut his tongue on Thursday seeking the ‘intervention of gods’ to make India win the World Cup semi-final match against Australia,”
The Times of India reported.
“Sudhakar of Ponneri in Vellore district, who closely follows cricket, was sad after Australia amassed 328 runs batting first against India in the semi-final.
“Desperation drove the youth to act in a reckless manner and he cut his tongue with a knife at his residence, the Jolarpet police said.
“On his hearing Sudhakar’s cries, his relatives and neighbours came to his rescue. They rushed him to Adukkamparai government general hospital.”
The girlfriend of star Indian batsman Virat Kohli, Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma, also found herself in the crosshairs of angry fans.
Anushka travelled to Sydney for the match only for Kohli to drop a catch and be dismissed for one run.
Indian actor Kamaal R Khan was particularly savage, spewing out a stream of tweets blaming Anushka for the defeat to his more than 600,000 followers.
But it was a big enough story in India for former captain Sourav Ganguly to address the issue.
“What wrong Anushka has done? She had only gone to see a cricket match like the families of other players. It is unfair to blame her for Kohli’s performance. It is the immaturity of people (criticising Anushka),” Ganguly told the Indian Express.
Anushka might want to be careful when she lands back in India and MS Dhoni was taking no chances with the protection of his home, posting extra security during the game.
“City’s Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar said that taking unruly fan behaviour after the team’s loss in the final-four stage into consideration, security has been stepped up in and around Dhoni’s residence,” the Indian Express reported.
“Prabhat informed that Ranchi police does guard Dhoni’s house round the year but more force was deployed during high-profile matches and big tournament’s like the World Cup.”
Maybe we should have just let them win.
