The Egyptians were polytheistic.. They had multiple Gods. (Like Hinduism). In fact, they worshipped over 1,400 different gods and goddesses in their shrines, temples, and homes.

Also note that many of the Egyptian gods and goddesses were anthropomorphic, which means that they were usually depicted as part human and part animal.
eg;
Anubis - Jackal headed God of the Dead or the underworld.
Horus - Falcon headed God - Son of Osiris & Isis - represents power, Sun & Sky - protects the people.
Thoth - Ibis headed God - Maths, Science, Magic and in general representing the Knowledge & Wisdom.

They had their own version on the creation of the World. Each deity was responsible for a certain part of daily life or the world around the Egyptians. These gods created the world, maintained the order and helped the people. So they needed to be worshipped. Sometimes, even the Pharaoh would be worshipped as a god too.
Read Egyptian Mythology... Probably the story about Osiris & Isis is the most popular. One of the earliest Romance-Tragedy in history.
