Never underestimate depression. It's an outcome of work stress. What's work stress? It's usually defined as an adverse reaction that people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work.
Some people argue that there's no such thing called stress, but it's simply a reaction that you are incapable to meet the requirements of the job. Simply your ineptitude. This is partly true too.
Stress in itself is not an illness. It's just a state or a condition. However, a consequence of stress causes mental & physical sickness to develop. Work pressure is different to stress. Pressure is positive reinforcement or motivation. But excessive pressure can cause stress.
In 2019, a software engineer working with a multi-national Indian I.T. Company committed suicide. It was suggested that deceased was forced to take such a step owing to stress and harassment at work. The Indian Supreme Court ruled that a boss cannot be held responsible if his employee is depressed due to the workload and commits suicide.
This is the same with many other countries including the UK (AFAIK). Only in France that it's officially recognised in the legislation.
However, the employer or the senior management has a moral obligation to look after the welfare of their employees. This incident should have never happened and could have been avoidable.
PS: Some talk about doctors here. I know of several very bright medical students who committed suicide or go off the rocker.
