Champika is an intelligent person. He is an engineer, but this is not enough. Our ex CB governer Mr Cabral did not have a degree and we know most of his staff had post graduate qualifications. But he did his job, (except Greek bond case ) and people were happy with him and govt was also happy. The most successful and also visionary leaders we had were (according to my own assessment) PM DS and R. Premadasa locally and , Mrs B(on international field). They newer went after votes and voters went after them. Mrs B postitioned SL as Non Aligned nation and being near to India that was the best we could do . Already India had an agreement with USSR at that time and we could not join with US(This was the grave mistake JR did and we know the result). Both DS and R.P did immense service to nation and I do not wish to state them.
My point is None of the political leaders at this time show any semblance of such a vision. Not GR, MR or Sajith and Patali (Ranil is failed leader and no need to mention him here as he is out and people had shown him the door and MS is any way out). They all go behind the people and arose some weakness (Sinhala Buddist feeling or some bogus issues such as MCC etc) and capture power and do not have a vision for Sri Lanka and take it to next level.
Champika was inter-Uni President during JVP insurrection and he was a sympathizer of their cause to gain popularity and stay in power. There after he ousted late H.L.de Silva from his party and got hold of some ignorant but popular monks (Ven Sumangala, etc) to gain votes and got to parliament from the popularity of them but lacked any programme or vision. Next he supported CBK and held important ministries he also supported MR to gain 0.3 % margin over 50% to gain victory in first round over Ranil in 2005 Presidential Election. Again held important ministries and did well.
If his performance as Minister is any yardstick before him there were others such as Mangala, Sjith, etc. But to me success as minster is not a good reason to appoint as leader of country. If so JVP should be given at least one provincial council as they were extremely successful in Pradeshiya Sabha level and there is no doubt about them. They also held few important ministries under CBK and did well in those ministries.
If Champika had abandoned his sinhala buddhist chauvinistic , qualities that resulted untimely loss of some innocent lives (eg. Bomb attack to Hindi Actor's performance -instrumental by his group) I am happy but that is not a reason to vote for him or to become President.
I saw some article written by Dr. Nalin Silva and Editor Malinda Seneviratna on web. Both known to me at different time of my life(not political) and they were much more close to Champika though I do not agree fully with either. It is important to read at least them before commenting about him. I think they are still available on web.
I do not wish to promote any person , and had not voted one party twice. My personal belief is Champika cannot be better than MR or GR (or Sjith , Namal ) .
