e Story
A miller (or man) and his son are taking their donkey to the market to sell. To ensure the donkey is in good condition, they decide to walk beside it.
First passerby: A group of travelers laughs, saying they are foolish for walking when they could ride. The man, wanting to please them, puts his son on the donkey.
Second passerby: They meet some merchants who criticize the boy for riding while his older father walks. To be agreeable, the father makes his son get down and climbs on the donkey himself.
Third passerby: Two women then exclaim how selfish the man is for riding while his "poor little son" has to trudge along on foot.
Fourth passerby: Baffled but still wanting to please everyone, the man takes his son up behind him, and they both ride the donkey.
Fifth passerby: Upon reaching the town, people jeer at them for overloading and being cruel to the poor animal.
Desperate for a solution that will satisfy everyone, the man and boy cut down a pole, tie the donkey's feet to it, and carry the donkey on their shoulders. This sight makes everyone laugh even harder. As they cross a bridge, the struggling, uncomfortable donkey gets a foot loose, kicks out, falls off the bridge into the river below, and drowns.
