Narangoda Liyanaarachchilage Thisara Chirantha Perera (Aged 23) has been tipped to become the next ODI captain of Sri Lanka, reliable sources from Sri Lanka Cricket has informed Cricinfo this afternoon.
According to a media release yet to be released tomorrow, two of the prominent members of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC); ex-Sri Lankan skipper now a politician Sanath Jayasuriya and the SLC Chairman Asantha De Mel have taken a prominent role in appointing Thisara as the new Sri Lankan ODI captain.
Meanwhile, Thisara's fellow team mate, as well as his school mate Angelo Mathews was stripped off from all captaincy duties in the national team. "It was a very tense meeting we had this afternoon, we had to let go of him (Mathews) to bring young blood to the team", Jayasuriya has told CSN TV, a prominent sports channel in Sri Lanka.
The decision was no surprise as it was leaked to the media that Dinesh Chandimal (23) was tipped to become the next Test Captain of the Sri Lanka team.
However the vice captaincy of the ODI team has not been decided yet, but undisclosed sources have mentioned that it will be either Jeevan Mendis (30) or Lahiru Thirimanna (23).
An attacking allrounder, Thisara Perera began his schooling at St Anthony's, Wattala, before accepting a scholarship to join St Joseph's College. It turned out to be a productive move as he teamed up with Angelo Mathews and produced many noteworthy performances in the thriving schools cricket scene. Perera played a key role in helping his school break the hoodoo in the Battle of the Saints (against St Peters College) that lasted more than 35 years. Perera received his maiden national call-up during Sri Lanka's tour of India in 2009 as an emergency replacement, ironically, for Mathews. It quickly led to an IPL contract when he was bought by Chennai Super Kings for $50,000. Perera is fast establishing himself as one of Sri Lanka's key 'impact' players, capable of clearing the ropes and breaking partnerships with his nippy seam bowling. During the home one-dayers against Pakistan in 2012, he became the fourth Sri Lankan bowler to take a hat-trick in ODIs.
