    ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has approved China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) to establish a new Petroleum Refinery in the island nation’s deep Southern Hambantota port, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said.
    “Cabinet approval was granted today to award the contract to China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) of China, to enter into an agreement to establish a new Petroleum Refinery & Associated Product Processing center in Hambantota,” Wijesekera said in his X (formerly Twitter) platform.
    The Minister on Saturday said the government expects at least $4.5 billion investment in the new refinery which will cater into exports as well as local markets. Sinopec has already started fuel retailing in Sri Lanka, competing with Sri Lanka’s state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (Ceypetco) and Lanka IOC, a fully owned subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation.

    ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is in discussions with China’s Sinopec to give extra land and assure water supplies after the company decided to expand the capacity of a planned oil refinery in Hambantota, Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said.
    “There are concerns on how the water supply is going to be provided for the refinery,” Minister Wijesekera told reporters Friday.
    The refinery will need more land and also revise conditions in a Board of Investment agreement, he said.

    ECONOMYNEXT – Sinopec has decided to double the capacity of the new refinery in Hambantota from the original proposal and investment, Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said.
    Officials of Sinopec Overseas Investment Holding Pvt Ltd (SOIHL) visited the Ministry of Power and Energy on Wednesday.
    “The officials indicated that the management of Sinopec has decided to double the capacity of the Refinery form the original proposal and the Investment. They intend to sign the agreements for the project and commence work by June 2024,” Wijesekera said on social media platform X (twitter).
    “The officials led by Vice President of SOIHL, updated on the progress of the negotiations with stakeholders for the construction of the Proposed New Refinery in Hambantota.”
    Discussions regarding the water supply, power supply, land allocation and BOI facilities will take place today with the relevant authorities, the minister said.

    ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka plans to sign an agreement with China’s Sinopec group to build a refinery in the island’s southern Hambantota district, Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said.
    Sri Lanka plans to ink the agreement within weeks, he told reporters.
    The only other contender to the refinery project Vitol Singapore, withdrew from the race, Minister Wijesekera said.

    It seems that Jeppos think that the China would just give away 3.7 billion US dollars for our convenience. But in reality I can guarantee that this project never will be succeeded. Even if the Chinese implemented that refinery (relocate some of their junk) here, it will never will be prductive, and we will end up with a massive burden. Please bookmark this comment.
