The Current EV Numbers in Sri Lanka
Since the vehicle import ban was lifted in early 2025, there has been a massive surge in EV registrations. Based on official 2026 data, here is an estimate of what is currently plugging into the grid:- Pure Electric Cars & SUVs (Nissan Leafs, BYDs, MGs, etc.): Roughly 13,000 to 14,000 (This includes about 8,600 newly imported EVs plus the older base of around 4,500 to 5,000 older Nissan Leafs).
- Electric Bikes and Scooters: Roughly 40,000.
- Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs): Around 49,000 new hybrid vehicles have been imported recently, the majority of which are range-extender plug-ins that also require charging.
The Math: How many vehicles does it take to hit 300 MW?
To understand the grid impact, we have to look at how much power different vehicles draw when plugged in at home. 300 MW is equal to 300,000 kilowatts (kW).- Standard Cars (Nissan Leaf / Small BYD / PHEV): Most people in Sri Lanka charge their cars at home using a standard 13A or 15A wall plug. This draws about 3 kWof power.
- To consume 300 MW, you would need 100,000 cars charging at 3 kW simultaneously.
- Fast Home Wallboxes:Some homes have dedicated 7 kW wall chargers.
- To consume 300 MW, you would need about 42,800 cars charging at 7 kW simultaneously.
- EV Bikes/Scooters: These use much smaller batteries and chargers, typically drawing about 0.5 kW(500 watts).
- To consume 300 MW, you would need 600,000 EV bikes charging simultaneously.
The Verdict: Is 300 MW realistic?
Your instinct is correct: if we only look at pure electric cars (like BYDs and Leafs), there are nowhere near the 100,000 needed to cause a 300 MW surge on their own.However, the claim actually makes sense when you add up the whole picture. Between 6 PM and 10 PM, people get home from work and plug in their vehicles. If you combine a large portion of the ~14,000 pure EVs, the ~40,000 electric bikes, and the ~49,000 plug-in hybrids, you suddenly have a combined fleet of over 100,000 vehicles hitting the grid at the exact same time. When they all start drawing power simultaneously, that 300 MW spike is highly plausible.
