A FINE AND RARE IVORY-VENEERED CABINET, SRI LANKA, 17TH CENTURY
Chest, detail (ivory, gold, rubies, sapphires; height 18 cm), Kotte, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), around 1543. The chest was made at the court of the king of Kotte in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and was taken as a gift to Portugal, which had conquered parts of the island earlier in the sixteenth century.
Ivory and Tortoiseshell-veneered Cabinet Ceylon, for the Portuguese market, late 16th-17th century.
Such cabinets were produced in Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) off the western coast of India on commission from Portuguese traders for the European market by the mid 16th century. The shape and function are European, but the subject and style of the elaborate carving, including perforation of the ivory plaques that make it up, are characteristic of Ceylon.
Box | | before 1542 (box), mid 16th Century. 4, Quarter 16th Century.
Casket carved from ivory and set with gold and rubies.
The Robinson Casket, made in Kotte, Sri Lanka ca 1557. Carved ivory with silver gilt hinges and gold filigree lock and handle set with sapphires. The 'Robinson Casket' is one of a group of at least nine solid ivory caskets made in Kotte, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and sent by the kingdom's rulers to Portugal as diplomatic gifts. It is believed to have been made about 1557 to commemorate the King of Kotte's conversion to Christianity and the birth of a grandson and heir to the King of Portugal.
Christ Child, Sri Lanka, second half of the 16th century Carved rock crystal; gold mounts set with rubies and sapphires. Rock crystal, a clear, colorless quartz, has been associated with India for millennia. Only a handful of such crystal Christian images survive. The rubies and sapphires set in gold mounts, which decorate the plinth under the Christ Child, give the object the status of jewelry.
