මං ලගදි පෙරේරා ඇන්ඩ් සන්ස් එකට ගියා කිරි කෝපියි බනිස් වගයකුයි ගන්න. කඩේ හිටිය වෙළෙඳ සහායකයා මේවා ටික පොලිතීන් මලු තුනක දාල කවුන්ටරය උඩින් තියලා තිබ්බා මට ගෙනියන්න. කිරිකෝපි කෝප්ප වෙනම කහ පාට සිලි මල්ලක. බනිස් කුඩා හතරැස් සුදු පොලිතීන් මල්ලක මුලින් දාලා නැවත කහපාට සිලි මල්ලක දාලා. මමත් තව ටිකෙන් වෙන කල්පනාවකින් ඒක අරන් එලියට යනවා. නමුත් ඔලුවේ කොනක මොකක් හරි අවුලක් තියන බවට හැගීමක් තිබ්බා. අපි එංගලන්තේ හිටි කාලේ සෑම මිලදී ගැනීමකටම වගේ කැශියර් අහනවා "ඔබට මෙය බහාලන්න මල්ලක් ඕනද? ඔබ ලග බෑග් එකක් තියනවද ?" කියලා. අපි කිව්වොත් බෑග් එකක් ඕනි කියලා ඒ හැම මල්ලකටම වෙනම අය කරනවා. මේ හේතුව නිසාම මගේ සයිඩ් බෑග් එකේ හැම තිස්සේම නැවත පාවිච්චි කලහැකි, ලස්සනට නවලා බෑග් එකේ දාගෙන යන්න පුලුවන් මල්ලක් හෝ දෙකක් අනිවාර්යයෙන් තිබ්බා. මේ පුරුද්ද ගොඩක් ගමන්වලදි අපිට ප්රයෝජනයක් වුනා. පී ඇන් එස් එකේ කැශියර් මගෙන් අහන්නෙවත් නැතිව මට පොලිතීන් මලු තුනක්ම දුන්න වෙලේ මෙන්නෙ මේ පුරුද්ද තමා මතක් වුනේ. කහ පාට පොලිතීන් බෑග් දෙකම මට අනවශ්ය බව මං ඔහුට කියලා මගේ කුඩා මල්ලට ඔක්කොම දාගත්තා. "ඔයාලා මට බෑග් ඕනද කියලා අහන්න එපැයි" කියලා කැශියර් ට කිව්වාම ඔවුන් මගේ දිහා ටිකක් අමුතු විදියට බලනවා වගෙයි මට තේරුනේ.
තව දවසක ෆැබ් බේකරියට ගිය වෙලාවක කෑම ජාති මුලින්ම දාන්න කඩදාසි බෑග් පාවිච්චි කරනවා දැකලා පොඩි සතුටක් ආවා. නමුත් ඔවුනුත් ඒ කඩදාසි බෑග් නැවත පොලිතීන් මල්ලක දාලා තමයි මට දෙන්න හැදුවේ, මම එපා කිව්වේ නැත්නම්. මට බෑග් එකක අවශ්යතාවයක් තියද කියලා විමසන්නෙ ඔවුන්ට උගන්වලා නැති පාටයි.
ආර්පිකෝ සුපර් සෙන්ටර් එකේදි මිලදී ගන්නා සෑම නැවුම් එලවළුවක්ම පළතුරක්ම වෙන වෙනම පොලිතීන් බෑග් වල දාලා දෙන්න තමා ඔවුන් සැරසුනේ. කෙසෙල් ඇවරිය වෙනම බෑග් එකක, දෙහි ගෙඩි තුනක වෙනම, දිවුල් ගෙඩී තුනක් වෙනම. මට පොලිතීන් බෑග් එපා කිව්වාම ඒ ගෑනු ළමයා ටිකක් වික්ෂිප්ත වුනත් එයාලා ගාව වෙන විකල්පයක් තිබ්බේ නැති නිසා බිල් ස්ටිකර් ඔක්කොම මං කිව්ව විදියට ගෙඩි වලම අලවන්න ඇයට සිද්ධවුනා.
කාර්ගිල්ස් සහ කීල්ස් එකේ කතාවත් ඕකම තමා. බොංචි ටික දාගන්න වෙන විදියක් තිබ්බේ නැති නිසා එක පොඩි මල්ලක් ගන්න සිද්ධවුනත් අනිත් ඔක්කොම බිල් ස්ටිකර් ඒකෙම අලවන්න කියලා කිව්වාම වෙලද සේවිකාව ඒක කරලා දුන්නා. අවස්ථා දෙකේදීම මගේ ගාව ලොකු නැවත් පාවිච්චි කල හැකි බෑග් තිබ්බා ඔක්කොම බඩු දාගෙන එන්න.
මට හිතුනේ මං ඒ ඒ අවස්ථා වලදී බලන් ඉදන් එපා කිව්වේ නැතිනම් කඩවල් හතරකට ගිහින් මට පොලිතීන් බෑග් විස්සකට වැඩිය ලේසියෙන්ම එකතු කරගන්න තිබ්බා. රට පිරිසිදුව තියන එක සහ පිරිසිදු කරන එක පාරිභෝගිකයන්ට විතරක් කරන්න පුළුවන් වැඩක් නෙවෙයි. "තියන නිසා ගන්නවා. ගන්න නිසා හදනවා"
ඒකට නිශ්පාදකයින් සහ වෙළෙඳ ප්රජාව සක්රීයව කටයුතු කරන්න අවශ්යයි. සෑම පාරිභෝගිකයෙක්ම මේ කුණු ප්රශ්නය ගැනවත්, ගෝලීය උෂ්ණත්වය ඉහල යෑම ගැනවත් ප්ලාස්ටික් පොලිතීන් වලින් වෙන හානිය ගැනවත් දැනුවත් වී ඇතැයි සිතන්න බැහැ.
ඒක වෙළෙඳ ප්රජාව බහුජන හිත සුව පිනිස කල යුතු ප්රතිපත්තිමය තීරණයක්. එයාලා එහෙම කරන්නේ නැත්නම් ප්රජාවක් හැටියට අපි හරි තීරණයක් ගන්න දැනුවත් වෙන්න අවශ්යයි. වෙළෙඳ ප්රජාව අඩුම තරමේ "ඔබට පොලිතීන් මල්ලක් අවශ්යද?" යි සෑම විකිනීමකදීම ඇසන තැනට ගේන වැඩ පිළිවෙලක්වත් අවශ්යයි.
I recently went to the P & S to buy some short eats and made my order and paid the bill. The cashier put my order in to three polytene bags and kept it on the counter for me to pick it up. The two pastries were in a white small polytene bag and then in a yellow polytene carry bag. The ice coffee cups were in another yellow polytene carry bag. I almost took it aimlessly and walks away but there was some notion of something being not right. While we were abroad in the west with every purchase the cashier would ask “Do you want a bag?” and if we say yes, they’d give a bag and charge for it. For this reason we made it a point to carry a small foldable reusable bag always with us. This became really handy habit. And when the P n’ S cashier gave me two polytene bags with out me asking for it and with out inquiring whether I wanted that, my habit reminded me that it’s not right.
I made the cashier remove the two yellow polytene carry bags and put the stuff in my foldable bag. I told him politely “You should’ve asked me whether I needed these bags first” to which he gave a bewildered look as if I’m bonkers.
Then at Fab bakers, I was impressed to see them using small paper bags as the initial bag to add the food items, but they also used the polytene carry bags without asking me whether I want them or not.
In Arpico super Centre for each fresh vegetable/ fruit item the sales girl tried to put them in separate polytene bags. One bag for 3 limes, one bag for a comb of plantains, one bag for wood apples and so on… I insisted that I don’t want these polytene bags. They didn’t have another option other than to paste the stickers on the food item itself. Again, the girl looked at me as if I’m some odd fellow.
At Cargils and Keels supermarkets the same scenario was repeated. I had to buy one small polytene bag as there were no paper option to hold the green beans. And I told the sales girl to paste all the bar codes in the same bag. She did them dutifully.
And I had my large reusable shopping bag with me on both occasions.
If I was not vigilant and if I didn’t insist on not wanting polytene bags I could have easily collected more than 20 polytene bags during these four visits to the shops. The country can not be cleaned by the consumers alone. The supply chain should be more socially responsible in their actions to reduce the usage. Every consumer will not be vigilant or informed about the plastic problem, global warning and garbage issues. It should be a policy decision done by these large scale merchants. It should ideally be a policy decision by the government. But since we have bunch of dope lunatics as a government, at-least the business community should make an effort. If they themselves cannot come up with such a thing, we should insist on making the right choice for ourselves at least.
If the whole merchant sector train their sales personal to ask every consumer at each sale, “Do you need a polythene bag?” it would be a good move to start with.Lawanya
