Who told the people they should vote for them though? The media did, the pre existing socio economic conditions did. The super rich control the media, they control the narrative, they control the market, they manipulate our decisions and decide who wins the elections. Putting the blame back on to people is more convenient because then you don't need to challenge the system

Good point. We are in a society full of fake news , manipulation, etc in all our decision making process not only for voting. So that cannot be divorced this happens in Russia, US, UK , and more close India, Pak .and even in China though system is totally different. Your education is the key to understand truth and seek truth. I know that we have failed in this regard. We do not have to beyond our Unis to understand this. I refrain giving examples for obvious reasons.
But we cannot let this country to go down like most our politicians (all parties) want for their private ends. There is no need to change the system all systems can work for betterment of people . Any good system can go bad if it is implemented badly. In democracy you get the government you deserve(this is majority) Eg. one cannot get a photocopy better than original (normal copier not an AI assisted !!).
