The vesting of the insurance monopoly in the state corporation results in the elbowing out of 51 insurance companies which have been carrying on business as general insurers. Monopoly in life insurance was vested in the corporation in 1961.
Last year's turnover of general insurance by the private companies was about $8 million, against the corporation's $1 million. A majority of the 51 insurance companies are foreign concerns. Private insurance companies will continue to service existing policies until they expire, but all new insurance will have to be with the state corporation. The Controller on Insurance will look after interests of existing policyholders who hold unexpired policies with companies until such policies expire.
The Shell sign, the Esso oval and the Caltex red star are no more, and henceforth the only sign for all motorists will be the Lanka ( Ceylon's ancient name) man with the torch.
This is the symbol of the Ceylon Oil Corporation.
The Petroleum Corporation took over the distribution of gasoline today. Gas stations throughout the island are busy removing signs of the private companies and replacing them with the Lanka sign. Most of the pumps of Shell, Esso and Caltex have been dry since distribution stopped about three days ago. But even as late as yesterday long queues of motorists formed at those filling stations still dispensing fuel oil imported by the Western companies. Many were turned away disappointed.
Private oil companies are retaining about 300 of the 1,300 clerical workers who will be displaced by the take‐over.
