Basmathi is a common group of plant varieties, there is one very good ancient Basmathie variety which has very low GI . World's best low GI varieties were found from Sri Lanka and Afganistan(not now!!) varieties according to the international researchers. International Rice Reseach Institute (IRRI) had done an extensive research on all the rice( ancient) rice varieties. It is available on their web site. But they have not used our common names (such as Heenaty, Kuruluthuda , (sri lanka) and Basmathie (india) etc). They have used a number( I do not know how such a number was used , arent our varieties not properly classified as plant species or sub species?? May a Sri Lankan scientist from Rice Research Centers enlighten us.
Be that as it may, I do not think that their numbers are not hard to name to the local vrieties as they will provide the country of origin and other details if a request is made thought proper channels /research centres
Some scientist needs to do this easy part in collaboration with commercial vendor/porducer, but yet to be seen. This research was more than 10 years old and these are things we need to promote (not fake syrups, drugs, etc). I didnot see a single programme on this subject in any of our electronic media. I saw a programme on international news long time ago where our varieties were
