This Baby Was Born With An Unusual Head Shape

Imagine finding out that you and your significant other are expecting a child then finding out there may be something very wrong with him or her. That was reality for Brandon and Brittany Buell last year when they found out they were expecting a baby boy. One day after finding out they were expecting, the young couple received a call from the doctor who was concerned about the way their baby’s head was developing.

Jaxon “Strong” Buell
The doctor’s concerns surrounded the size and shape of baby Jaxon’s head. Although the doctor was not sure of an exact diagnosis, he gave the couple five possible conditions that it could be. He then forwarded them to genetic counseling where they were given the option to terminate the pregnancy.

Fighting For Jaxon
“I was irritated,” said Jaxon’s mother, Brittany. “It made me mad because they were so quick to offer [termination] without even knowing for sure what his diagnosis was. They gave up. We ran all the tests we could. We were 23 weeks along at that point and they told us we had one week left in Florida to terminate.”

Feeling Lost
Brittany and Brandon returned home after their visit with the genetic therapist. They discussed their options and, while they were sure they were not going to abort their child, they understandably felt extremely lost.

Brandon’s Vision
Feeling lost, the couple was unsure of what to do. Then, Brandon said he had a vision. “Something inside me, almost like it was coming from Jaxon, was telling me ‘Don’t give up on me,’” said Brandon. “I remember having a heartfelt, emotional conversation because I felt I was being told that from him, even though we didn’t yet know him and we had to go on blind faith. We didn’t feel that was in our hands. If he wasn’t going to make it, God would make that decision.”

Preparing For The Worst
Doctors informed the couple that Jaxon was unlikely to make it through the entire pregnancy and, if he did, he would not live long after birth. In August 2014, Jaxon was born and received an official diagnosis of Lissencephaly.

What Is Lissencephaly?
Lissencephaly is a rare brain disorder where the brain does not take on the normal shapes and curves that it should. People diagnosed with the condition all experience different things. Some do not live long, some live to adulthood, others are missing fingers and toes and some have an unsymmetrical face.

Jaxon’s Lissencephaly
“They told us he wouldn’t hear, see, or have any senses,” said Brandon. “He wouldn’t tell us he was hungry. He may not do any of life’s normal luxuries. Early on it was very tough for us. It was tough not knowing what we were gonna get and we could lose him at any time.” However, Jaxon has surpassed anyone’s expectations.

Growing With Lissencephaly
Brandon, Brittany and the doctors were all surprised and inspired by Jaxon’s progress. Now over one year old, Jaxon is progressing at the same rate as other children his age. “It’s more than inspirational,” said Brandon. “It’s life changing.”

Support For The Buells
The Buell family has started a Facebook page as well as a GoFundMe account for Jaxon. They take life one day at a time, but are thankful to have their baby boy. Most recently, they have connected with other families with children who have Lissencephaly. The Buells said they are thankful for that interaction and support from others throughout the world.

Jaxon Inspires Many
Jaxon has inspired people worldwide (especially his parents) to live life to its fullest. His father, Brandon, said, “Maybe it’s kinda crazy, but you have to look at life from the child’s standpoint. He certainly was alive and existing [in the womb] we just couldn’t see him. I wouldn’t want my parents who loved me enough to conceive me to not give me a fighting chance. As a child he can’t choose for himself. It’s up to the parents to give their child a chance just to make it.” They are so glad they gave Jaxon that chance.
