It's not accidentally but you use the gear lever instead of the turn signals. However, there isn't anything to worry as these systems are electronic and the worst case scenario only the N will be engaged. Happens to me most of the time in Europe & the US. After a couple of days you get used to it.
I get warned the moment I touch the gear lever by my son who always is in the front seat. He watches like a hawk.
Also when he drives this doesnt happen. He's more attentive and aware.

Are you referring to the paddle shifters? Or steering mounted gear knob?

If you are referring to the paddle shifters, I' ve had not issues at all as the paddle shifters are located below the steering wheel.
