Certainly a pure sine wave inverter is the best if you can afford it. These USB power converters do not damage the car electronics. It can certainly under perform or by malfunctioning can cause damage to your smart devices that you plug into them.
Do not buy cheap off market crap. If you intend to use one go for a reputed make. I am using a Maxboost that delivers 4.8A (24W at 5V) for quite a while. Also Anker has a good charger. Romoss is now selling a cheaper one (36W) but I haven't tried it.
Many cars come with a USB charger factory fitted as standard.

To be fair on him, it's true that these USB devices cause RF interference. But it does NOT cause any damage to the car electronics as he says.
Usually in the VHF band and it can only affect any radio stations. You might pickup some static noise in some bands depending on how weak the radio signal is.
If you use a Spectrum Analyzer you can easily prove that these devices emit RF noise. The cheaper ones emit more noise. But nothing to be alarmed of.
