The Buddha was able to see conditions and the causes of conditions, and actions and the consequences of actions.

For this reason, he was able to say so-and-so did this action, and had been reborn here. This was direct knowledge of things in the here and now.

He was able to predict some things with certainly into the remote future because he could see the consequences of those actions. For example, stating that a person will be a Buddha some day is because he sees an intentional action made by another (i.e., as aspiration to Buddhahood) and can knows the consequence of the strength of that that action.

This is not that he could see everything that could happen in the future - the whole premise of kamma is that we choose our actions in the present. He just saw the actions people did before him and could speak to their consequences."
