You can't check gold yourself. But you can take the item to a jewellery shop and ask them to check if its real 22kt gold and its actual weight. Jewellery shops usually check this free of charge for you.

Gemstones can be checked from a laboratory. This is usually for high value gemstones such as blue sapphires, rubys, diamonds etc. You can also get a certificate.

If you don't know anything about jewellery, buy from a reputed place. I recommend Vogue (good but very expensive), Devi Jewellers Pettah (good quality and prices), Pattakanus Pettah.

People also say Swarnamahal jewellery is genuine but I don't really trust them because of their management issues.
