This "Monkey Business" surely has a hidden agenda. There are Macaque monkeys native to China. One of the most endangered species are native to China, the Yunnan golden monkey - only about 3000 remains now - more endangered than the Panda. Partly due to the destroyed forests where they live and partly because of hunting. There are so many other species native to China. Why do they need our Macaques? Protect the monkeys in there for a start.
Monkeys are eaten in China, Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam and possibly some other countries too. Malaysia tried to export earlier but I am not sure whether they did. However, their macaques eat rats in their palm plantations. They are an asset to them because these monkeys dig out the rats hiding up in the palm trees.
The SL government wants to cull the monkeys... But this will obviously create an outcry possibly led by the monks. So they export the monkeys to China, either for meat or for medical research. As I mentioned before the cost of a monkey in China went up from $2400 to about $9800 now, after Covid. But these are the Rhesus monkeys for research. With Covid China banned all imports of monkeys and this created a shortage and a cost escalation.
Also there will be a collateral damage - while trying to capture 100,000 another 100,,000 could easily get killed. I am not so sure about anything because they haven't mentioned who the interested parties who needs monkeys in China. It's surely a monkey business.
