After Singapore fell to Japs, AUS/ENG flights operated through Koggala, using Catalina flying boats.
It's being replaced by Consolidated Liberator Planes in 1944, and fly from Perth to Rathmalana. But, on it's return journey, Rathmalana runaway is not long enough to take off a fully laden Liberator (in fact they are converted B-24 bombers). So, it flies to Hingurakgoda (at that time it's called Minneriya) first, then refuel, and fly to Perth. These services no longer needed after the end of the war.
