Prof V.K. Samaranayake is not the father of IT in Sri Lanka. There were others who did a lot before him. He entered IT much later and his expertise lied in the Statistics where he had obtained post graduate qualifications.
In Sri Lanka lot of people like media personalities as fathers of many things but in fact people who come on TV are really not so.
Long before Prof Samaranayake did any thing on IT our Examination Department used programme developed by Prof Karunarathe( an ex Vice Chancellor of Moratuwa- husband of Prof Kusuma Karunaratne) and that was the recorded earliest application of IT in government. Prof Karunaratne also designed Kalutra Chaitya using CAD thereafter. He did not go behind politicians and lot of people are unaware of him specially in the IT.
Prof V. K. Samaranayake was not the father of IT in Sri Lanka, though he was one of the pioneering personalities in IT when ICT(presently UCSC) was gifted under special conditions to University of Colombo by JICA he became head of that and later heading CINTEC , ICTA etc .
When a person is dead we do not speak bad of him, so I will restrain from doing that. He was head of ICT when I was in the University of Colombo and I also respect him as an elderly person, but needed to put the record straight. I urge any person who wants to give him the place of father of IT in Sri Lanka to do a bit of research before that.
The present head of ICTA Prof Epasinghe was not a person who thought IT /ICT or qualified in that field for such a high post though he was a Professor in mathematics department and was also an ex-Dean of Science Faculty. Some later in the day people will accord the same to him not knowing the facts. These positions are obtained by some not on merit. Another good example was late Prof Nandadasa kodagoda . Though he was professor of Forensic Science he did not have even a master degree in that field, his postgraduate qualification was in psychiatry. When a person is appointed to a post lot of people go by their charm instead of knowledge and depth. Specially when they come on TV and talk big . The media savvy people are the least knowledgeable in their respective fields. The knowledgeable people shun the media and contribute more to the field and to the general public and would not seek publicity for their work.

The father of IT in Sri Lanka, former ICTA chairman, professor Mr. V. K. Samaranayake is one of my most favorite personalities in Sri Lanka.
He's truly a legend. I greatly honour him. His death brought tears to my eyes.
Every IT student should commemorate him at the time of convocation.

එහෙම කියන්ඩ බහ මචන්.. මෙතුමා ගොඩක් සේවයක් කරලා තියනවා.. ඔය කියන්නේ මෙතුමා ඉගනගෙන තියෙන්නේ වෙන පැත්තක් නිසා මෙතුමාට තොරතුරු තාක්ෂනය ගැන වැඩිපුර දැනුමක් නැතුව ඇති කියලනේ.. එහෙම න බන්.. ඒ කලේ අද වගේ නෙවෙයිනේ.. මැත්ස් ස්පෙෂල් එක තියන කෙනෙක් අනිවා අයි ටි ගැනත් හදාරලා තියනවා...මෙතුමාට අයි ටි ගැන හොඳ දැනුමක් තියනවා.. එක දන්නා ය දන්නවා මචන්... මෙතුමා මනුස්සයෙක් විදියටත් කොහොමද කියල උබට පහල තියන කොමෙන්ට් එකෙන්ම දැක ගඳ පුළුවන් මචන්....

I have a special story about him. When i went to the Open university for a postgraduate scholarship the interview panel told me that they do no know about BCS. I told that BCS is good enough for any MSC in Sri Lanka. But they told me they do not know. I told them if you guys do not know BSC how do you assess IT qualifications. I went to BCS office and they directed me to Pro. Samaranayake. I told him about my story. Even he was very busy he listened to me very carefully and issued a letter BCS is acceptable for MSC in Uni of Colombo.
Then what he did was remarkable. He phoned up UGC. And told prof. Mendis "Hi i'm sending a boy (mama puthek ewanawa) pls issue a same letter to him with your signature. Even though i did not get the schol but still i have those recognition letter which later BCS was got recognition from the UGC as well.

You are a great man..

යාළුවා මම කොහෙවත් කියල නැහැ ශ්‍රී ලංකා තොරතුරු තාක්ෂණයේ පියා තමයි මෙතුමා කියල... ඔබතුමා කෙලිම මාතෘකාවෙන් පිට පැනල මෙතුමා ගැන ඔබතුමාගේ ඔලුවේ තියන දෙයක් එක පාරටම එලියට දාපු බවක් පැහැදිලිවම පේනවා.. මෙතුමාට කලින් දේවල් කරපු ය ඉන්නවා මචන්.. මම දානවා ඒ ගැන.. නමුත් සමස්තයක් වශයෙන් මුළු ලංකාවේම තොරතුරු තාක්ෂනය නගසිටුවන්ද සංකල්පමය වශයෙන් මෙතුමා යම් යම් වැඩපිළිවෙලවල් දියත් කල මචන්.. මෙතුමා නිසා ඇති උන දේවල් ගොඩක් තියනවා...

මහාචාර්ය සමරජීව (සැම්) කරුණාරත්න කියන්නෙත් මම ගොඩක් ගරු කරන පුද්ගලයෙක් මචන්.. එතුමා තමයි දැනට SLIIT එකේ chancellor විදියට ඉන්නේ.. මම කාවවත් සංසන්දනය කිරීමක් මේ ලිපියෙන් කරලා නැහැ මචන්..

නෑ එතුමාගේ යහපත් බව මම කිසිම විදිහකින් විවේචනය කරන්නෙ නෑ ගොඩක් හොඳ කෙනෙක් වෙන්න ඇති. ඒ ගැන විවාදයක් නෑ. අනික එතුමාගේ අයිටී සුදුසුකම් ගැන මම කියන්නෙත් නෑ. මම කියන්නේ ඊට වඩා හොඳ දක්ෂ අය එදා හිටියා.
ඕනෑම කෙනෙක් තනතුරකට ආවට පස්සේ ඉතින් වෙන කෙනෙක් හිටිය නම් ඉතින් අපිට පෙනෙන්නේ එයා විතරනේ. ඔය කමෙන්ට් දාල තියෙන්නෙ අන්න ඒ අනිත් අය ගැන දන්නේ නැති අය. ඒකට වැරද්දක් කියන්නත් බෑ ඉතින් මොකද තමන් දැකල තියන දේ විතරයි තමන් දන්නේ. අනික එතුමා ඒ තනතුර ඔලුවේ තියා නොගෙන හිටිය හින්ද කට්ටිය ආදරෙයි.
මම කියන්නේ එතුමාට වඩා සුදුසු, දැනීම තියෙන, ගොඩක් දන්න කට්ටිය හිටියා, ඒ ගොල්ලෝ අදටත් අයිටී ෆීල්ඩ් එකේ ඉහලම ඉන්නවා නමුත් ඉතින් අපි කතා කරන්නේ තනතුරේ හිටපු එක්කෙනා කරපු සේවය මිසක්, එයා හින්දා අපිට අහිමි උන ඊට වඩා සේවයක් කරන්න පුළුවන් මිනිස්සු ගැන නෙවෙයි.

Those who praise him now as the "pioneer" are those kids who don't know the truth.

ඉතිං අංගුලිමාලේ, අර කොල්ල ඔය නූල ගෙතුවෙ අහවලා ට උපහාරයක් හැටියට නොවැ. එහෙනං, මක්කටැයි මේ හැටි වාද-විවාද...?

අනික, අහවලා සේවය කෙරුව ද? නැති ද? යන්න මේ නූල ට අදාළ නෑ කොල්ලො. දැන් අහවලා පරලෝ සැපත් නං, අහවලා ගෙ සේවය ගැන විපරම් කරල ඇති පලක් නෑ නෙව.
