Buddhism as you know is what you see around you. Begging was not part of the path for laymen. Buddha preached how to make an honest living, how to look after family, and how to save. Without that knowledge it's easy for you to look at the tree worshipping, begging, rock worshipping halfwits and come to conclusions about the core teachings. But that's not an informed conclusion my friend.
