CERN to assist Sri Lanka to develop Physics teaching and scientific collaboration

May 08, Colombo: Minister of Science, Technology and Research, Susil Premajayantha has announced that a Steering Committee will be established in Sri Lanka to develop physics education at the high school and university levels and to strengthen cooperation with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the Sri Lanka mission in Geneva said.
The Committee would comprise a core group drawn from universities and relevant agencies, such as the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research, COSTI, NSF, etc.
The Minister made this observation when he addressed an event on Wednesday 3 May 2017 in Geneva, to mark the visit to CERN by the first scientific delegation from Sri Lanka comprising five Sri Lankan physicists representing universities of Sri Lanka from 3-5 May 2017. Sri Lankan Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva and Consul General to Switzerland Ravinatha Aryasinha and officials of the Mission who initiated the process were associated in the event.

Sri Lanka PM meets Xi; China to invest 780bn yuan on One Belt One Road Projects

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has met Chinese President Xi Jinping at a conference on the One Belt One Road initiative where China is building facilities along an ancient land and sea silk routes.
A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said Xi had said China is pledging 780 billion yen (113 billion US dollars) for the OBOR projects and Chinese firms investing along it.
China is setting up a fund of 100 billion yuan for the silk route and Chinese firms investing along the OBOR would get 300 billion yuan.
To build infrastructure and energy, China Development Bank and Exim Bank of China had also committed 380 billion yuan, the statement said.
Sri Lanka is trying to sell Hambantota Port, which was designed and built by a Chinese firm. It was built with 1.3 billion US dollars borrowed from China by the Sri Lanka government.
However media reports said the deal is not expected to be concluded during this visit. (Colombo/May14/2017)

Roll up sleeves and work on B&R— Story of Sanjeewa: employee of CCCC Colombo Port City project

With average height, dark skin, intelligence behind a pair of spectacles, speaking slowly and gently, Sanjeewa is a local employee of CCCC (China Communications Construction Group Ltd.) Colombo Port City Project in Sri Lanka. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He had worked overseas in several engineering companies in Dubai and Qatar for more than twenty years.

In 2013, Sanjeewa returned to Sri Lanka and worked for a local engineering consultancy company for nearly 3 years. In 2016, he joined CCCC Colombo Port City Project as deputy manager in charge of the design, planning and implementation of water supply, electricity and other wet water system of the project.

Sri Lankans are friendly people. Sanjeewa is no exception, who works at his own pace.
Colombo Port City project is by far the largest single FDI (foreign direct investment), in Sri Lanka. With reclamation of 269 hectares of land right beside the existing CBD, Colombo Port City is bound to transform into the new business center of Colombo and would boost domestic economic growth, which will uplift Colombo’s international impact and Sri Lanka’s image.
One of Sanjeewa’s main duties is to get in touch with government departments to ensure quality and on-time delivery of municipal facilities into the Port City.
Once, when Sanjeewa was having a meeting with the local water supply authority for the Port City project, a senior engineer from water authority told him, “We can only provide one water supply for the moment, and it is too difficult to provide two.”
Sanjeewa said, “To guarantee successful development and operations of the Port City, a secured and reliable water supply is a must.”
“You can’t think of the problem from the perspective of a Chinese company, please also think from our prospective, you’re an experienced engineer, you should know how difficult it is for us to provide 2 water lines connecting all the way throughout the downtown area!”, the engineer said to Sanjeewa.

Sanjeewa said, “Making sure a secured water supply is the joint responsibility of the Sri Lankan government and the Port City company. There will be 250,000 people working and living in this area once the project is completed, only one water supply is surely not reliable. But If there really is difficulty in water supply, we should work together to find a solution, please offer us two water lines!”
Finally, the water supply authority agreed to provide two water supplies for the Port City.
Sanjeewa is a low-profile person when he is at work. While in daily life, he is pleased to share his experiences in China with colleagues. He would like to show them photos taken during his study at Tsinghua University.
He recalled that more than 2 decades ago, he completed a Bachelor’s degree on Electrical Engineering in Tsinghua University in China.
His first impressions on Beijing was the cold weather and large area, since Colombo is hot and small. He said, his study and life in Beijing remains vivid in his mind, but he had never returned to Beijing since his graduation in 1992.
“China is the second largest economy in the world, China is a great country, I hope to have a chance to visit Beijing again and see the changes of China. Sri Lanka had ever suffered seriously from the long-lasting civil war, which dragged down economic development. The country now is in urgent need for a project like Colombo Port City to drive its economy. This is also one of the reasons why I chose to work in the Port City company.” Sanjeewa said.
He added: “I am confident that Chinese enterprises can help us to create a better future. I wish, just like me, more and more Sri Lankans will come back to build on our own land. I believe that Colombo will become a prosperous city as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen in China, with complete and modernized municipal facilities, beautiful buildings, a good environment for commercial and business activities, and people working and living happily. I’ve heard of a sentence recently from my Chinese colleagues which I like very much, that is, let's roll up our sleeves and work on it! I hope we could work together to make the great vision a reality.”

China willing to give Sri Lanka $ 24 billion more as part of OBOR
BEIJING: As Sri Lanka struggles to repay a $ 8 billion debt to China, Beijing is "willing to give" an estimated additional $ 24 billion as part of the One Belt One Road initiative. China has offered more loans to countries taking part in the 'One Belt One Road' initiative, Sri Lanka's Minister on Special Assignment Sarath Amanugama said. "In Sri Lanka's case, it may be about four times of what we are getting now, over and above $8 billion... they are willing to give," Amanugama, who is part of the official delegation headed by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremeshinghe that took part in the summit meet, told PTI here.
"So we have to negotiate, whether it is Government-to- Government or through (China sponsored) Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) they are going to extend credit," he said. With the existing $8 billion, it will total to $32 billion. China is investing more than $50 billion in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) over which India raised concerns as it traverses through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
India skipped the Belt and Road Forum meeting attended by 29 heads of state and governments besides heads of the UN, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. In his statement on May 13 about OBOR, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Gopal Bagley referred to debt burden. "We are of firm belief that connectivity initiatives must be based on universally recognised international norms, good governance, rule of law, openness, transparency and equality. BEIJING: As Sri Lanka struggles to repay a $ 8 billion debt to China, Beijing is "willing to give" an estimated additional $ 24 billion as part of the One Belt One Road initiative. China has offered more loans to countries taking part in the 'One Belt One Road' initiative, Sri Lanka's Minister on Special Assignment Sarath Amanugama said. "In Sri Lanka's case, it may be about four times of what we are getting now, over and above $8 billion... they are willing to give," Amanugama, who is part of the official delegation headed by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremeshinghe that took part in the summit meet, told PTI here.
"So we have to negotiate, whether it is Government-to- Government or through (China sponsored) Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) they are going to extend credit," he said. With the existing $8 billion, it will total to $32 billion. China is investing more than $50 billion in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) over which India raised concerns as it traverses through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
India skipped the Belt and Road Forum meeting attended by 29 heads of state and governments besides heads of the UN, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. UAE’s Lulu Group reveals plans for mega investments

The UAE-based retail and leisure giant LuLu Group is planning to invest heavily in Sri Lanka in the future, officials said yesterday when the group entered Sri Lanka by opening a US $ 8 million food packaging facility in the Katunayake Export Processing Zone to supply LuLu operations worldwide.
“This is a 100 percent export unit for fruits, vegetables, commodities and other FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) products from Sri Lanka. This is only an initial investment. We are planning to do more,” LuLu Group Chairman and Managing Director Yusuff Ali said at the facility’s inauguration.
He will be meeting President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss the group’s future plans for investments in Sri Lanka during his visit here.
LuLu Group Director A.V. Ananth noted that the US $ 8 million investment will multiply several times over when the group invests in a hospitality project under the second stage of LuLu investments in Sri Lanka, while the third stage will bring in one of LuLu’s famous hypermarkets to the island.
LuLu subsidiary, Y. A. S. Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd., under which the packaging plant was set up, is expected to increase LuLu’s product sourcing from Sri Lanka to US $ 10 million in the first year of operations and is expected to reach up to US $ 25 million in annual exports in the future, according to Ananth.
“We are hoping to expand our export operations here in the future as well,” he said.
The group has already been exporting 3,500 tonnes of products from Sri Lanka worth US $ 5 million annually through various partners.
“We have been exporting from Sri Lanka for a while but we wanted to set up our own facility to create synergies, standards and for attractive packaging. This will be the largest such facility in Sri Lanka,” Ali said.
The Abu Dhabi-based group recorded an annual turnover of US $ 6.9 billion in 2016 and operates in 32 countries. It owns 134 hypermarkets, supermarkets and department stores and also has investments in shopping malls, hospitality and travel, shipping and import-export operations.
According to Forbes, Ali is currently ranked as the 367th richest man in the world, worth US $ 4.9 billion and is India’s 25th richest individual.
