Richard Pieris & Company PLC plans to invest between Rs 15 to 20 billion in several unique projects in the next three years that will see electric cars, lithium batteries and Oud perfume manufactured in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Sena Yaddehige, Chairman of Richard Pieris & Company PLC, said the group profit that stood at Rs 180 million in 2002, today, before even finishing the year has increased to Rs 4,100 million, a 28 times increase. He further said the business that commenced manufacturing rubber erasers has developed to such a extent that there was not a single house that had no Arpico product in Sri Lanka today.
Dr. Yaddehige owns 10 patents has over 20 million cars all over the world running with his chips.
The Chairman said he would embark on enormous important projects and one of them is building a lithium battery factory. This was required to complement his other major project which is to build electric cars in Sri Lanka.
“For this, an 80 acre plot of land has already been purchased for Rs 730 million,” he said addressing a gathering in Colombo on Wednesday. Dr Yaddehige said he plans to introduce the four-door electric car for a very competitive price of Rs 1.5 million.
He said his next project is to manufacture the world’s most expensive Oud perfume in Sri Lanka which is made from the resin of the wallapatta tree. He said they would convert 68% of their plantation to grow wallapatta. The wood of a 9 to 10 year wallapatta tree has a value of Rs 225,000. If 400,000 such trees are grown, the value of those trees would be in excess of Rs 100 billion in 8 to 10 years time, he said. “But the trick is we have to inoculate a certain fungus into it and we are working on it.
Richard Pieris & Company has another project involving tea, to extract its flavour and essence and market it as green tea. “Last year it was launched in Las Vegas,” he said. An extract of the plant will be set up in Maskeliya for this purpose.
Dr Yaddehige said they have also decided to replace the soil of their plantations and a team of five top scientists of the country was on the job. He said they plan to take 180 tons of special kind of enriched and enhanced compost every three months to the plantations to enhance the quality of soil in the plantations.
He said they plan to set up an electronic division with a target of Rs 25 billion turnover in the next five years and a retail sector with a target of Rs 40 billion turnover in the next five years.
The asset base of their finance company has grown to Rs 11 billion with Rs 4 billion in deposits within five years. The Group’s plantation sector is expected to record a Rs 1.5 billion turnover.
He said they own the fastest growing life insurance company with a hundred percent growth. The Group employs 32,000 and in addition provides indirect employment to a further 200,000.
The 25th Arpico Supercentre has been also opened at Talawatugada and the three storeyed, 60,000 sqft biggest Supercentre will be opened in Kegalle in February and the Kandy Supercentre is being expanded at the moment with the addition of another 25,000 sqft and will be opened by the end of this month. Arpico Supercentres will also be opened in Katugastota, Kundasale, Moratuwa and Wattala.

S. Korea gives Sri Lanka zero interest loan for garbage collection

ECONOMYNEXT - The Export-Import Bank of South Korea has approved a zero interest loan of US$14 million for supply of garbage collection compactors to Sri Lanka to improve solid waste collection.
There is a serious shortage of waste collection equipment in Sri Lanka where only 11.6% of solid waste is collected by compactors.
“The main objective of this project is to improve the solid waste management system through reduction in travel time and maintenance cost of collection vehicles and increase the waste collection quantity,” the South Korean embassy said in a statement.
The project will provide 190 garbage compactors to local authorities in all nine provinces of Sri Lanka in order to collect and transfer large amount of waste to dumping sites in an efficient and economical manner.
“Korea Eximbank which operate ECDF (Economic Development Cooperation Fund) entrusted by Korean Government will finance this project with a high concessional EDCF compact loan of 0% interest rate and 30 year repayment period including 10 year grace period,” the embassy said.
The project executing agency will be the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Council and Local Government and the National Solid Waste Management Centre under the purview of the same ministry will function as the project management unit.
Following the tragic garbage dump collapse in Meethotamulla, the solid waste management becomes a pressing concern in Sri Lanka.
“Currently, about 3/4 of solid wastes generated in urban areas are disposed through unsanitary open dumping due to the insufficiency of waste collection system,” the statement said.
“In this context, this project will not only help prevent further environmental pollution and damage that was caused by unsanitary open dumping due to the insufficiency of waste collection system but will also enhance health and sanitary lifestyle of people in the long-run.
The Korean embassy said the supply of garbage compactors project does not have only economic meaning but also diplomatic meaning.
“Korean government’s decision to finance for this project comes at a significant time as this year 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea.”

ECONOMYNEXT – World Bank Group is considering lending Sri Lanka $100 million to expand higher education including increasing enrollment in priority areas for economic development like science, engineering and mathematics, and promoting innovation.
The loans will be from the International Development Association (IDA), and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) of the World Bank for the Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD) Operation.
A Finance Ministry statement said the proposed programme aims to increase enrollment in higher education programmes that are important for an aspiring upper middle income country.
It also aims to “develop the higher education sector in areas of vital importance for future economic development such as modern teaching and learning that blends academic achievement with good socio-emotional skills and a vibrant research and innovation culture that supports the expansion and growth of higher-value industries and services.”
AHEAD focuses on three result areas. One is increasing enrolment in higher education in priority areas for economic development like Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, known as STEM. The second is improving the quality of higher education, and third is promoting research, development and innovation, the statement said.
The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Higher Education and Highways throughout the period of 2017-2022.
Depending on the availability of World Bank funds to Sri Lanka, it has been proposed to obtain two financing facilities from IDA and IBRD.
One is a ‘Credit of Special Drawing Rights’ (SDR) being the equivalent of $33 million from the International Development Association and the other a credit of $67 million from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The financing and loan agreements were signed on Monday at the Ministry of Finance by R. H. S Samarathunga, secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media on behalf of the government of Sri Lanka and Idah Z. Pswarayi-Riddihough, Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, on behalf of the World Bank.

US to transfer Coast Guard Cutter to SL

A US Coast Guard Cutter would be transferred to Sri Lanka further enhancing US-Sri Lanka Indo Pacific Partnership, the US Embassy said today.
Ahead of the transfer, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas A. Shannon said this Coast Guard Cutter is a tangible symbol of growing partnership between the two countries and reflects shared commitment of the two nations to regional stability.
Mr. Shannon who visited Sri Lanka last month announced that the US would offer a second US Coast Guard cutter to the Sri Lankan Navy pending completion of Congressional notification.
The Secretary Class High Endurance Cutter would allow Sri Lanka to more effectively police its coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone and to protect its sea lines of trade and communication, US earlier said.

Sri Lanka joins China's Belt and Road with operations of Hambantota Port: PM

COLOMBO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Saturday that Sri Lanka had joined China's Belt and Road Initiative with the launch of operations at the Hambantota Port through a joint venture between China and Sri Lanka.
The port was handed over to the China Merchant Ports Holdings (CMPH) on a 99-year lease agreement at a ceremony, and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority together with CMPH will manage the operations of the southern port.
"Today we have made arrangements for the management and long-term success of the Hambantota Port. This Sri Lankan and Chinese joint venture, which has taken over the management of this port, and its operations will ensure an additional port in the Indian Ocean," Wickremesinghe said.
"The Hambantota Port will add to Sri Lanka's concept of transforming into a hub in the Indian Ocean."
The Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative, proposed by China in 2013, aims to build trade and infrastructure networks connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road routes.
The prime minister said that with the development of the Hambantota Port, steps were also being taken to construct an economic zone in Hambantota which would see hundreds of foreign investors launching factories within this zone in the near future.
"This will definitely help strengthen our economy," Wickremesinghe said.
CMPH said in a statement that the Hambantota Port will be the largest multi-purpose port in Sri Lanka and also the island nation's single largest private investment.
"The aim of the government of Sri Lanka and the China Merchant Port Holdings is to transform Hambantota port from a "transshipment hub" to a "total logistics hub" of the Indian Ocean region," the company said.
For CMPH, Hambantota is its second investment in Sri Lanka, the first being the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT). The CICT, which is the island nation's only deep-water terminal to date, has already notched 2 million TEU containers.
In July, the Sri Lakan government together with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority signed an agreement with CMPH for the development and operation of the Hambantota Port on a Public-Private-Partnership basis.

"The aim of the government of Sri Lanka and the China Merchant Port Holdings is to transform Hambantota port from a "transshipment hub" to a "total logistics hub" of the Indian Ocean region," the company said.
For CMPH, Hambantota is its second investment in Sri Lanka, the first being the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT). The CICT, which is the island nation's only deep-water terminal to date, has already notched 2 million TEU containers.
In July, the Sri Lakan government together with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority signed an agreement with CMPH for the development and operation of the Hambantota Port on a Public-Private-Partnership basis.

මේ මස 08 වැනිදා හම්බන්තොට වරාය චයිනා මර්චන්ට් සමාගමට පැවරීමට නියමිත බැවින් ඒ පිළිබඳ ආරියශීල වික්රමනායකගේ මතය කුමක්දැයි විමසීම පිණිසය. එම පැනය ඔහු වෙත යොමු කිරීමත් සමඟ එයට පරිපූර්ණ පිළිතුරක් ලබාදීමට ඔහු පසුබට නොවීය.
