The Bank of China has an important role to play in making finances and credit available to Sri Lankan enterprises that operate in the country. Bank of China can bring more and more Chinese investments in to Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
“We need the fullest support from the Bank of China.The bank’s presence here in our country will be the strength for us to become the financial centre,” the PM said speaking at the opening of the Bank of China at Shangri-La hotel on Wednesday.
“We have been able to build a stronger economy during the past three years.The Bank of China is the fourth largest bank in the world and the bank has come to Sri Lanka to commence its business. It’s a new chapter in the modern economic history of Sri Lanka and China.”
“The common understanding between the two countries has grown much more and the One Belt One Road (OBOR) Initiative proposed by China and the hub of the Indian Ocean was proposed by Sri Lanka,” Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said.
“We in the last three years have also taken major steps to ensure that Sri Lanka’s economy developed and became much stronger.We are open to the world.”
“We have developed the Colombo Port and now we are developing the Hambantota Port as a joint venture between the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and China Merchant Holdings.This is just the beginning of a larger area of economic cooperation, as Chinese investments are coming and other investments are coming into our country. “
“This is why we have now taken the step of entering in to a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China in addition to what we have with Singapore and deepening the FTA with India, who are the largest markets.Then we will be accessible from Sri Lanka in addition to the European Union where we will have access to under the GSP plus,” the Premier said.
Chinese Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan reiterated that Sri Lanka and China together form a robust partnership to augment world trade and commerce. “We are seeing a new era dawn for Sri Lanka, strengthening the relations the two countries have had both culturally and commercially for centuries. As Bank of China makes its mark in Sri Lanka, not only will it pave the way for numerous opportunities in developing trade and commerce between the two countries but will also pave the pathway for Sri Lanka to achieve its goal as the international finance and logistics hub for this region.”
Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of the Bank of China Wang Xiquan said, “We are enthusiastic about this new chapter we are inking with Sri Lanka.This will not only support the Sri Lankan Government’s infrastructure development initiatives but will also strengthen Sri Lanka’s economy through Chinese investment. Our ultimate mission is to ensure that our clients succeed and that benefits accrued will permeate to all stakeholders.”
Sri Lanka becomes the 54th country in the world to join the world’s fourth largest bank.The Bank of China’s total assets posted at US$ 2.7 Trillion in 2016. “US$ 80 million will be invested in Sri Lanka,” an official of the Bank of China said.

US GSP trade programme to restart in April

The United States’ GSP trade incentive programme for Sri Lanka will become active again on April 22, the US Embassy said Friday.
“This will open our market up even more to Sri Lankan goods and create jobs,” said James Russo, a spokesperson for the US Embassy in Colombo.
The programme had lapsed on December 31, 2017, after Congress failed to re-authorize the law. The GSP scheme for developing countries, which gives preferential duties to certain products, was reinstated in a budget bill on March 23.
Russo said US importers who brought in Sri Lankan exports in the time in between could claim customs duties retroactively.
One hundred and twenty countries, including Sri Lanka and the Maldives, regained GSP support with the March spending bill.
The US is the largest market for Sri Lankan exports, taking in about $3 billion worth of goods last year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. About 75 percent of those exports are clothing items. The re-authorised GSP scheme runs through December 31, 2020.

India’s Mahindra eyes making small car with Sri Lanka’s Ideal Motors

ECONOMYNEXT – The joint venture assembly plant to be set up by Indian automaker Mahindra and Mahindra Limited (M&M) with Sri Lanka's Ideal Motors will most likely make a small passenger car for the rural mark, officials said.
Total investment in the project will be around Rs2.5 – 3 billion, said Nalin Welgama, founder and Executive Chairman of Ideal Group, the sole authorized distributor for Mahindra vehicles and motor cycles in Sri Lanka.
The joint venture, in which M&M has said it will invest up to Rs250 million, is in the final stages of deciding on the vehicle which will be designed by M&M.
The plant will be set up in the Kalutara district with production likely to start by November or December this year, Welgama told a news conference.
“The first products might not be an LCV (light commercial vehicle) but a small car,” Welgama said.
“It has to be a small car at an affordable price to the market. Studies show we can sell at least 100 cars a month in the first year,” he said.
Sanjay Jadhav, Mahindra and Mahindra’s Vice President, Head of international operations (South Asia), said sales of their vehicles were good because of the focus on after sales service in their partnership with Ideal Group.
“Ideal Motors has an excellent network across the island to serve customers which is helping us do better. We are now taking this relationship to the next level with the assembly plant.”
With over 65,000 Mahindra vehicles in Sri Lanka, mainly in rural areas, and a good after sales service, the joint venture is confident of being able to sell its new product, Welgama said.
“We should be able to touch those areas, not particularly in the Western province. We are very strong in the after-market – that’s our mainstay, why we reached meteoric gains with our products. We will be catering mainly to the rural sector.
In Sri Lanka, Mahindra through its Bolero Maxi truck dominates the light truck market.
