Construction of Mahaiyawa Housing Project to begin in three months

    By Ranmini Gunasekara

The Urban Settlement Development Authority (USDA) will commence the Mahaiyawa Housing Project within the next three months for the slum dwellers in Mahaiyawa, Kandy, USDA Chairman R.S. Kahawala said yesterday (4).

The Mahaiyawa settlement is reportedly one of the largest underserved settlements in Sri Lanka.

“We have identified 1,220 families within this settlement that need re-housing. These slum dwellers have been there for as long as 60 to 70 years, with two to three families residing in one small shack. We have had some setbacks in the past for this project, but with the leadership of Minister of Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs Sajith Premadasa, we expect to start this project in about another three months,” added Kahawela. He further said that the USDA was to initially receive funds from Pakistan for the project, but added that the grant was denied due to recent political changes within the Government of Pakistan.

However, Kahawela added that the USDA hoped to receive international aid from the World Bank and other interested parties to officially commence the project.

“We are almost finished with the planning and designing stages of this project. This will be one of the biggest low income settlement re-housing projects in Sri Lanka,” he added.
