Sampath Bank says investigating financial irregularity

Samapth Bank PLC yesterday said it is investigating a ‘financial irregularity’ at one of its branches, and said the ongoing investigation prevents them from disclosing details any further.


“The incident occurred a few months back and the bank has already taken appropriate measures to correct the situation and ensure non-recurrence,” Sampath Bank said in stock market filing.

“We wish to assure the public that we have taken steps to ensure our customers will not be affected in anyway due to the incident reported,” it added.


A media report said a Sampath Bank branch manager and another individual were remanded for 14 days on the orders of Kaduwela Magistrate Courts following their arrest by the Criminal Investigation Department for the scam exceeding Rs.125 million.

I know one of the victims personally, so have heard both side of the story. Would like to get answers for the following from the bank.

1. Since the Sampath Bank has already accepted that there has been a fraud on the Ayurvedic Physician . can you please explain what steps have you taken to “correct” the situation.

2. Have you informed your customer who has now been defrauded by the bank of the steps you have taken to “correct” the situation?

3. Does the bank accept that its Internal Audit went in to the matter, when complained and reported that there has been no mistake on the part of the bank or its representative, the Thalahena Manager.

4. What steps have the bank taken to readdress the customer of the bank in connection with the fraud committed on him?

The bank manager has, with the help of a regional manager Sampath Bank and the present Manageress of the Thalahena Branch, have debited the account of a customer who is an Ayurvedic physician and made bank transfers to 21 persons who were completely unknown to the customer.

“This is the first time in the banking history that a bank has committed a fraud on a customer,” a banker told Colombo Telegraph. Our sources said there would be criminal liability on the directorate of Sampath Bank.


When the bank manager and another recipient of the cheated money were produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate, journalists from all main media stations have been present at the Magistrate’s Court premises covering the story. However, Sampath Bank, one of the biggest advertisers in the country, presurrized media into not running the story.
