Peace Air, owned and managed by Sri Lankan business magnate Gamini Wettasinghe, has made a bid worth Euro 5 billion (or US$ 5.5 billion) to acquire the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines and Mihin.
"We are the best bid till now. We have achieved a mark of 65 points while Singapore Airport Terminal has got 68 points. But, our SWIFT (Confirmation of funds) have come in now and our marks will rise to 76 which is the best," two Peace Air Directors told Ceylon Today late Friday night.
The highlight of the acquisition is that the SriLankan brand name and the livery will remain and there will be no retrenchment of staff, but it will be expanded.
Under the proposed route expansion programme, there will be five destinations each in Africa, China, Europe and Australia, ten in India and 6 in East Asia, they said, adding that all the destinations which were cancelled earlier, such as Rome, Zurich and Frankfurt, would be reinstated.
One of the key hallmarks of the deal is that Peace Air has also signed an Agreement with Lufthansa Consulting, the consulting arm of the German national carrier, which has over 450 aircraft, to do the due diligence test.
They said that they will be beginning with the cancellation of all the lease agreements for the existing 21 aircraft and returning them while bringing in 25 new aircraft which is also a strategy to increase the capacity and the expansion.
There are also ambitious plans to fly to five Australian destinations – Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, and another, which will be decided later and also five destinations in Africa. These details would be announced later, they said. He assured that no employee would be retrenched. "We will be beginning by paying all 6,878 employees a bonus of
Rs 100,000 and we will be recruiting more to fit in with the expansions," they said.
They also stressed that they would be getting ready to cancel the lease agreements of the 21 existing aircraft, for which the national carrier was paying excessively, adding that there were four aircraft which were as old as 17 years. They also decried that the lease for a one-year-old aircraft was the same as the 17-year-old aircraft.
There was also a meeting with the SriLankan Airlines Chairman Ajit Dias and the Management on Thursday, where most of these were spelt out.
We will be going for the best bid, whether it be Airbus or Boeing, they added. They also lamented that they had heard that the Government was negotiating with Qatar Airways as opposed to Peace Air which was 100% local. "Why should we end up as a regional carrier for Qatar Airways, when we have always fared as an international carrier which has a much larger network, they queried indignantly.
The most attractive part of the deal is that Peace Air has undertaken to bear the debts of both SriLankan, which stands at US$ 953 million and Mihin US$ 69 million.
Peace Air has also expressed interest in getting a 70% share, 90% equity stake of Mihin and 100% equity stake in SriLankan Airlines Catering Services Ltd.

Boeing president Harry Stonecipher promised to focus on performance and rid itself of any taint of arrogance.
The most delightfully strange press conference - at Boeing - suggests the medicine is working. A Sri Lankan start-up airline, PeaceAir, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to buy a Boeing 747-400 combi.

Peace Air plans to donate 80% of its profits to charity and its people believe in prayer. Chairman Gamini Wettasinghe sees the airline as an instrument to promote peace on his island. When asked to say a few words.

Peace Airways to fly six A 380s from Mattala
Peace Airways, the airline of peace, will be operating six airbus 380s from Mattala shortly that will fly to China, Africa, Australia and Europe.
There will be two A 380 aircraft coming almost immediately, followed by another two a year later and the remaining in another two years. All six flights will arrive at Mattala within the next two years.
"We will be operating the six Peace Airways aircraft from Mattala while another six Boeing 787 Dream Liner Aircraft will be operating to and from the Katunayake International Airport (KIA). In addition 50 brand new aircraft will be purchased from the national carrier, Airlines," Peace Air Chairman Gamini Wettasinghe told Ceylon Today on late Friday night.
He also said that the investment for the Mattala aircraft is US $2.2 billion while a further US $ 5.5 billion has been allocated for the purchase of aircraft from Airlines.
One of the main aims of the Peace Airways strategy would be to fly Chinese tourists into Africa, and Australian tourists to Europe and Africa where all the operations will be en route from Mattala, he explained.
He also said that the budget carrier Mihin would be used as a feeder carrier to fly tourists from Indian destinations to Mattala from where they will to Europe and Australia and other African and Chinese destinations.
Wettasinghe also explained that the US $2.2 billion for the Mattala Airport would be used for the improvement of the infrastructure at the airport such as electricity, etc along with the salary allocations for staff for three years inclusive of a bonus of Rs 100,000 per employee.
He also said that the issue with the Airlines right now was that despite the airline making an US1b annual turnover and taking on-board some five million passengers annually, the cause of the losses was due to the 48-50 per cent of that figure being diverted to suppliers of operating leases.
He said that all these operating leases would be null and void when the new buyer – Peace Air purchases the national carrier and gets rid of the leases which will also pave the way for the acquisition of 50 brand new aircraft for in addition to the additional aircraft needed for Mihin.
He also assured that all the 400 Mihin employees who were terminated, would be re-employed with the growing needs of the budget airline.

he operating crew of a Airlines flight from Madurai to Colombo including its Pilots and Cabin Crew were filmed creeping through a barbed wire fence and penetrating the Madurai Airport Security Defenses to gain access to their aircraft to operate their flight back to Colombo.
Capt.R. De Alwis and his crew of the national carrier were facing difficulties in gaining access to the main airport entrance in Madurai after their crew stop over. This was due to a protest being held by locals in close proximity to the airport in Madurai.
Instead of staying in the Crew Hotel and turning up to operate the flight once the protests in Madurai were over, Capt. De Alwis had looked at all options to get the crew to the airport to operate their flight back.
This meant that the crew transport provider was forced to take a dirt road and shove the Stewardesses and Pilots through a fence which borders the airport.
Whilst access to the airport should be entered through the proper channels the former Air Force Wing Commander and now Captain of Airlines took a decision to penetrate the Madurai Airport defenses instead.
His job usually is to enter the airport through the proper legal channels to gain access to the aircraft and not through any illegal means.
