Novo Nordisk had a notice on their site that the drug is in short supply. There are several methods to synthesize this drug but none of them are easy. Moreover the Patent is valid till 2031. The cause for short supply is just because many wants it for obesity.
Semaglutide is a type of medication called a GLP-1 Receptor Agonist. It affects the hormones insulin and glucagon, and helps to bring down your blood sugar by changing your appetite.
Semaglutide was developed to be a longer-acting alternative to Liraglutide, which is the active ingredient in Victoza and Saxenda.
Rybelsus is the brand name for Semaglutide in tablet form, making it quite different to Wegovy and Ozempic.
Jesper Lau, Vice President of Diabetes Protein and Peptide Chemistry at Novo Nordisk is credited with the invention and development of Semaglutide in 2012. The company holds the patent.
But remarkably, history is much different. It was Daniel Drucker who did a lot of research (University of Toronto Endocrinologist) around 1994, after learning that the venom of a Gila monster lizard contained hormones that can regulate blood sugar. Gila monster venom is twice the toxicity of a rattlesnake but the venom volume is quite low.
The first GLP-1R agonist approved for clinical use was Exenatide (synthetic exendin-4), a peptide originally isolated from the lizard venom by John Eng in 1992. Subsequent molecular cloning studies published by the Drucker laboratory in 1997 demonstrated that the lizard genome contains two distinct proglucagon gene sequences encoding GLP-1 and a separate proexendin gene.
So the GLPs has many fathers over a span of nearly 30 years, which was duly recognized in the 2017 Harrington Award.
"The fourth annual Harrington Prize for Innovation in Medicine has been jointly awarded to Daniel J. Drucker, MD (Mount Sinai Hospital, Canada), Joel F. Habener, MD (Massachusetts General Hospital, USA), and Jens J. Holst, MD, DMSc (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) for their discovery of incretin hormones and for the translation of these findings into transformative therapies for major metabolic diseases such as diabetes."

PS: Semaglutide injections been shown to cause thyroid cancer in some animals. It is not known if this happens in humans, but both thyroid cancer & pancreatic cancer has been flagged as possible serious side effects.
A warning is on the box says "If you or any of your family have ever had MTC (Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma), or if you have an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) - Do not use Ozempic"
