"No Time To Die" Crosses $700M Global, Becomes Biggest Hollywood Pic Of Pandemic Overseas

MGM/Eon/Universal’s No Time To Die continues to bond with audiences and has crossed $700M global. Importantly, that includes over $558M at the international box office, making Bond 25 the biggest Hollywood movie overseas in 2021 and throughout the pandemic era, overtaking Universal’s own F9. Globally, it is currently sitting about $12M behind F9. The Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed NTTD had a great start in Australia this session and has now surpassed Skyfall’s lifetime in 18 markets and Spectre’s lifetime in 22

‘Red Notice’ Seizes Biggest Netflix Movie Opening Weekend Ever; Italian Pic ‘Yara’ Tops Streamer’s New Weekly Charts

In the wake of redefining the measurement of binge-watching on streaming, Netflix’s new top 10 film chart for the week of Nov. 8-14 lists Rawson Marshall Thurber’s $200M action feature Red Notice as the No. 1 film for the period with 148.7M hours watched since Nov. 12; easily the most-watched movie ever on Netflix for a pic in its first weekend.

We reported yesterday that Samba TV clocked 4.2M U.S. households who tuned into the Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds movie for at least five minutes, more than any Disney+ movie to date and HBO Max theatrical titles in their respective weekend debuts.

There was also some Johnson spillover in the top 10 from Red Notice with the first weekend of Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level on Netflix which notched 10th place with 6.76M hours watched.

‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Becomes 2nd Movie During Pandemic To Cross $200M At Domestic Box Office

    deo9tac-64ed41aa-246d-4cf4-9837-2ecc6ad2e954.jpg

Sony, which doesn’t mess around with theatrical day-and-date releases like some other motion picture studios, can celebrate their Marvel sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage crossing the $200 million mark in the US and Canada. It is the second movie to do so during Covid, after Disney/Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. That latter Marvel title looks to stand at $224.4M by the end of this weekend as the theatrical release, which launched over Labor Day, finally hits homes on Disney+.

Worldwide, Venom 2 will be well north of $430M by EOD tomorrow. This weekend, Venom 2 is on track to make $3.7M in its 7th weekend, landing at $202.4M by the end of Sunday.

Sony hopscotched Venom 2 around the calendar, and with good reason, protecting its theatrical release, as they knew they had a great movie which ultimately wound up with 4 stars from audiences on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak.

‘Eternals’ Tops U.K. Box Office, ‘No Time to Die’ Continues Blockbuster Business

    957B06AB-C91D-447E-A35A-32381666B99D.jpeg

Disney's release “Eternals” continued to rule the U.K. and Ireland box office for the second weekend in succession with £2.9 million ($3.9 million), according to numbers released by Comscore.

The latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, now has a total of £10.5 million after two weekends. James Bond film “No Time to Die,” from Universal, continued its blockbuster business with £1.5 million in the second position after seven weekends and now has a mighty total of £92.7 million.

In its fourth weekend, Warner Bros.’ epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune,” placed third with £1.17 and has now grossed £18.9 million.
Eros STX’s Princess Diana film “Spencer,” starring Kristen Stewart, collected £698,065 in its second weekend in fourth place and now has a total of £1.5 million. Rounding off the top five was Universal’s “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” which collected £574,219 in its fourth weekend and has a total of £6.4 million. After a strong few weeks, Sony’s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” exited the top five after five weekends, collecting £524,170 in sixth place for a total of £17 million.

The upcoming weekend, Sony’s keenly anticipated release “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is opening wide across more than 300 screens. Warner Bros. is releasing “King Richard,” starring Will Smith while Modern Films is opening Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Japanese Oscar contender “Drive My Car,” which won three prizes at Cannes. Trinity Cine Asia is opening the Chinese blockbuster “The Battle at Lake Changjin,” which boasts the directorial talents of three A-listers from the region, Kaige Chen, Dante Lam, and Tsui Hark, and a cast that includes Wu Jing and Jackson Yee. The film is currently the highest-grossing title in the world.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Eyes $45M Worldwide Opening Weekend, Looks At Thanksgiving Long Game – Box Office Preview

    maxresdefault.jpg

In the wake of Sony’s attempt to reboot Ghostbusters in 2016 with a female leading cast, the studio hasn’t given up on the IP and finally is releasing an all-new Jason Reitman-directed sequel, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which it has protected for a theatrical release throughout the pandemic.

Exhibition bosses went nuts at CinemaCon for the movie, which has been described as having a Steven Spielberg-esque sensibility in its cast of kids — one of whom is the descendent of Harold Ramis’ Dr. Egon Spengler from the original 1980s movies. Franchise vets Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts are back as well.

There’s been a fervent response to Ghostbusters: Afterlife from local press out of recent screenings, and Sony is betting that the feature, which is also produced by original Ghostbusters filmmaker Ivan Reitman, will be a holiday sleeper. If the pic comes up short this weekend for some reason, let’s see where it stands by the end of Black Friday weekend.

Sony is conservatively projecting $27M-$28M for the U.S./Canadian weekend; industry rivals are seeing $30M-$35M from 4,300 theaters. Tack on an overseas launch in UK, Germany, Italy, Latin America (including Brazil and Mexico), Benelux, Sweden, and Denmark, and the global start for the movie could reach $45M. As the adage goes, Ghostbusters is a domestic property, not overseas. Stateside previews start at 4 p.m. Thursday at 3,450 theaters. Sony will have all the Imax and PDFs in the pic’s opening U.S./Canada suite.

Currently, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is 66% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes from 89 reviews. That’s better than the 59% Rotten of 1989’s Ghostbusters II and under the RT scores for the Paul Feig 2016 reboot (74% certified fresh) and of course, the 1984 original, which stands at 97% certified fresh. Feig’s version starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones opened to $46M domestic off a $144M production cost before P&A and did a 2.79x multiple from a B+ CinemaScore for $128.35M domestic and $229.1M worldwide. This new version scripted by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan stars Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Logan Kim, and Paul Rudd, and it cost a reported $75M before P&A.

China Outlines 14th Five-Year Plan For Movies; Whither Hollywood? & Does That Market Still Matter?

    The-Battle-at-Lake-Changjin-furyosa-5.jpg

Outlining its 14th “Five-Year Plan” for the development of Chinese films, the China Film Administration has said it plans to increase the number of movie screens in the country to 100,000 by 2025. Good news, and along with that, the regulator will be promoting 10 domestic tentpoles each year. This is not far off from an earlier, pre-pandemic five-year goal but came to light this past week as China held the sixth plenary session of the 19th Communist Party of the China Central Committee.

In 2020, China became the world’s biggest box office market, overtaking North America. This largely was due to an earlier pandemic reopening of cinemas and the performance of local titles. As of this past week, China has passed RMB 43B ($6.7B) in the box office, led by propaganda title The Battle at Lake Changjin (RMB 5.65B//$884M)).

Per local media, China intends to be “a strong film power” by 2035. The country already is an important market and has been for Hollywood in the recent past (to reiterate: the split is only 25% to the studios, which can be significant depending on the local promo spend). However, phe last year has seen the PRC take a pass on potential hits from Hollywood — notably Marvel movies, which traditionally have been catnip to local audiences.

And, confoundingly, it has accepted movies that were already greatly available elsewhere. Just this past weekend, Disney’s Jungle Cruise was treated to a dismal $3.4M — in a market where Dwayne Johnson is a draw. But given the lead time, piracy was a factor.

Meanwhile, where is Venom: Let There Be Carnage? The 2018 first movie was a massive hit in China at $269M+.

‘No Time To Die’ Outguns ‘F9’ To Become Biggest Hollywood Title Of 2021 & The Pandemic Worldwide

    no_time_to_die_movie_review_1633000405434_1633000410752.png

MGM/Eon/Universal’s No Time to Die is crossing $733M worldwide this weekend, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2021 — and of the pandemic era.

After topping $708M through last Sunday, and becoming the biggest Hollywood movie overseas in 2021 and throughout the pandemic, we’ve been expecting Mr. Bond to overtake the previous global leader, Universal’s own F9 ($725M WW cume and the only other studio movie to cross $700M this year). In total to date, Daniel Craig’s last turn as 007 has an estimated gross of $154M domestic and $579M at the international box office.

The Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed 25th Bond pic was initially released in late September in most overseas markets; it then added North America, China, and Australia in later weeks. On October 20, it became Hollywood’s No. 2 movie of 2021 globally and continued to hit new benchmarks, crossing $700M last weekend. Overall throughout its run, it scored the biggest pandemic opening weekend in 36 markets.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Lives It Up With $60M Global Debut; ‘Eternals’ Leads Offshore Hollywood Weekend – International Box Office

    ghostbusters-afterlife-grace-proton.jpg

There was a lot of holdover play this session overseas with one major new Hollywood addition in Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife which came in essentially on par with pre-weekend offshore projections at $16M in 31 international box office markets. However, with domestic’s overperformance, the Jason Reitman-directed sequel trapped a better-than-expected $60M global opening. In IMAX, the worldwide start was $4.7M.

In like-for-likes overseas, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is currently tracking ahead of Free Guy (+52%), Jungle Cruise (+26%), and Cruella (+94%).

The UK claimed the top spot with a $5.8M start, and Mexico launched to $2.4M at No. 1 (222% over Free Guy, which is seen as a four-quadrant comp). Italy also debuted at No. 1 with $1.4M.

‘Encanto’ Chimes In With $70M Global Bow; ‘No Time To Die' Overtakes ‘Spectre’ In UK, Now Market’s No. 3 Movie Ever – International Box Office

    ENCANTO-ONLINE-USE-teaser1_039.00_0283-H-2021.jpg

Notably, on the menu this weekend overseas were new openers Disney’s Encanto and MGM/Universal’s House Of Gucci. The former came in lower than hoped at the international box office, with $29.3M in 47 material markets, though it did make the low end of its global projection at $69.6M (including domestic‘s 5-day frame). The Disney animation has a 92 Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, but may well have suffered from increasing Covid concerns in some markets, and a lack of a rush-out factor for new IP.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Weaves Record-Breaking Presales Overseas; Sets 24-Hour Benchmarks In Several Key Markets

    spider-man-no-way-home-new-poster-green-goblin-social-featured.jpg

Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is activating mega presales in international box office markets. Due to beginning offshore rollout on December 15, just ahead of domestic’s December 17 debut, the Jon Watts-directed installment has set all-time records in multiple markets for the first 24 hours and has caused some ticketing websites to crash. We’ve heard tell of fans heading to local cinemas to stand in line for advance buys when they couldn’t get them online.

Awaited with a fever pitch, the Tom Holland-starrer, for example, took $7M in Mexico during the first 24 hours tickets were available last week. That’s a new milestone, coming in 40% above Avengers: Endgame. Other markets to score the best-ever presales in the first full day including the UK, Spain, Brazil, and Central America. Per our information, the UK, at 12 days out from release, was seeing advance sales at three times those of No Time To Die at the same point.

Brazil’s advances are 5% over Endgame at the same point; Poland is showing the best presales since Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker; Portugal passed No Time To Die’s total presales in three days, and Australia and Turkey are on par with Endgame.

As Anthony has reported, domestically, No Way Home broke first-day presales records for the pandemic for both the No. 1 and No. 3 circuits, AMC and Cinemark, and also repped their second-best day of presales ever after Endgame.

Not all offshore markets have begun presales, but the current data is a great harbinger of things to come — of course, the Omicron variant could still be a factor in how things play out, but Spidey is clearly weaving a web of anticipation. When the first trailer dropped in August, it racked up an all-time record of 355.5M views worldwide in its first 24 hours.

‘Encanto’ Leads Sluggish Offshore Studio Weekend; ‘House Of Gucci’ Fashionable – International Box Office

    Encanto-House-of-Gucci-1.jpg

We’re in a sort of holding pattern at the international box office, as big year-end titles are still in the wings. This weekend was all about holdover business — and some further market launches on major pics already in release elsewhere. Last frame’s debut, Disney’s Encanto, leads the session again for the studios with a solid 30% drop, adding $20.7M from 49 material markets for an overseas cume of $58.1M and a global total of $116.1M.

Positive word of mouth is helping to drive the animated musical, with France, Italy, Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico among the continued No. 1s this session. The Asia Pacific has been underwhelmed, however. The top performers to date are France ($6.5M), Colombia ($5.9M), UK ($4.2M), and Russia ($3.5M) which is tied with Italy and Korea.
